Do our cars have plastic or metal fuel tanks (petrol)
i sometimes nearly run on empty and wonder if is bad for the car, i.e. metal=debris in fuel?

All tanks are of saddle design, with the fuel pump mounted in the offside secton. Both the pump and the in-tank filter have a level float. The output from each is integrated by the IPK to give the nett content on the gauge. There's no problem in running petrol tanks to a minimum level. There's no metal debris in there from production or corrosion and any other type of particles finding their way inside are removed by the filter which is housed in the nearside half.

Diesel models shouldn't be driven below a quarter-full tank. This reduces the feed head to the pump and any mechanical weakness will result problems. Diesel fuel pumps a common cause of breakdowns.
