View Full Version : Xenon Adjustment - MOT Failure

My 05 ZTT has just failed the MOT due to the N/S Xenon being about 1" too low. The garage stated that the adjuster failed when they tried to turn it. I've been quoted £500 for a new unit.

Does anyone if it is possible to lift the beam without the adjuster or whether it is possible to trade my unit in for a recon unit?

Failing that does anyone know where I get a new unit for less than £500?

SMC has one in stock for £150 but unfortunately it's for the O/S!!

Thanks, Rob

If the manual adjuster cog under the bonnet doesn't work, the cog has probably come adrift from the spindle. Here's the adjuster I mean:

The blue cog may be spinning on the shaft. If so, a dollop of Araldite/epoxy resin has been known to work. This may not be your problem.

If the adjuster wheel on the dashboard light switch is ineffective, the problem is probably with the stepper motor/gear system inside the lamp housing. This is somewhat more complicated to fix because it requires making access to the motor. This can be done by cutting a hatch in the plastic casing. Once inside, I believe the usual cause is pretty easy to fix. Certainly worth trying if you've any DIY skills or a small bank account.

There is a full decription of this fix on another forum. I will not provide a link here, since it's against the rules. I'll PM you with that.

Thanks T-cut.

The blue cog is no longer attached the spindle (thanks to the garage's attempt at adjustment!). I've managed to turn the spindle using some grips but there is no movement so I suspect there's an internal problem.

Other than the money, it seems a shame to scrap the unit as it still works.

Thanks for the PM, I'll have a go at the DIY fix.

Just had a thought, is it possible that the self levelling sensor could be faulty rather than the Xenon unit?

Is there any easy way to check this?

if the sensor is faulty, the ecu will dip the lights to about 6 feet in front of the car..It is a common fault for the sensor arms to flip over when the cais jacked up.

Certainly the position sensors on the suspension are known to give problems. Whether this is a likely cause here will depend on whether the 'xenons' fitted to the subject car are HIDs or not. I think that remains unclear.
