Hi i bought a rover 75 1.8T around Christmas it has done 55k
let me just say i have not played with cars for some years and don't have the space or the guts to try on these new engines they look so scary.

2 weeks ago i did notice the car was starting OK BUT for the first few min of running it was sluggish.
after 1 min the car drove great.
i did also notice some gurgling behind the dash.
the lads at work said HGF.
the next day i went to spain for a week and when i came back the engine was locked up.
turn the key and it just made a whine like it was trying to start but the engine didnt turn over.
i live on a small slope so i tried to bump the car thinking it was a little flat.
the car got to a few mph and i let the clutch out and it came to a dead stop.
i tried it 3 or 4 times aat no more than 10mph and it didnt turn the engine over.
when i ran out of slope i tried the key and the car started.
ran the same as before for 3 days only doing about 6 miles total and the car overheated 100 tards from home.
loss of water but none in oil.
exhaust fumes smell like rad water sickly smell the garage at the back of me sais they would look at it a week ago but still no luck i just dont think they want the job.
anyway after sitting there for a few days it wont turn over again.

what i am asking is this going to be a HGF job or are we looking at more than this?

and more importan does anyone know of a Garage or whatever in Bolton or close to repaid this as the car is just sat here for a week.
there is no where to do the work here so it will need to be move.
if anyone know a garage i can call let me know thanks paul

Sorry about your hassles. I can't recommend anyone in your area but you could get it recovered to either:

M&G, MGR specialists in Bradford. I can personally recommend them and they sorted my HGF plus full service belts etc in January for £500 or

Crowtrees Garage, MGR specialists in Huddersfield. By all accounts they have a good reputation.

Hope you get it sorted.......

Well i Gave the Crowtrees Garage, MGR specialists a ring and they said they will look at it.
HGF start at £350.

http://www.mg-repairs.com/

i live in Bolton and they are in Huddersfield some 40 miles away and they gave me a number of a recovery truck i called him and he said £80.

see what happens thanks for the info

Whoa a minute! . as yet, there is no proof the fault is the Head gasket!!

Have you tried charging your battery up? I think you should asap.. Thats urgent as you can't check things properly with a low battery.

Next, get a new header tank cap. Next. Check that your cooling fan is working.. e.g. set the car temp to lo both sides and press auto making sure that "econ" is NOT selected, Start the engine and your fan should start to run.

Are you losing water? If so, try == With the engine cold, undo the header tank cap to release any pressure in the system.. Then, (after putting the cap back on) run the engine for 20 seconds ish, and turn it off. Next, very slowly undo the header tank cap and listen for the hiss of escaping air. If there in none, then ypu DON'T have a blown head gasket.

The gurgling behind the dash could be caused by water in the plenham box! Check its drain holes are clear..

Please try these things and report back.

Fair comment James. Paul - do as James says then get it recovered to Crowtrees :D ;) But seriously if you're not too sure about the mechanics and if the history is patchy it'll do no harm with getting a specialists to put a trained eye over things. If only there was one closer to your location........

:wss: ... :p: :D .. heh heh..

Paul? mention "Rover" to a mechanic and he will yell "head gasket"! So do some checks yourself..

e.g. Scribbler was told by 3 garages that his head gasket was gone! But a compression check proved they were all WRONG! The problem proved to be a faulty header tank cap!

What area of Bolton are you from Paul? I live on Beaumont Chase at the bottom of Wigan Road and always take my car to Morris Green Motors off Morris Green Lane and i would recommend to anyone as they do an a1 job. They're number is 653900. They do get busy but usually get you in within a couple of days but worth every penny. :D

Just a thought. Have you checked the plenums for water in case your ecu has been drowned with you saying you could hear a noise from behind the dash?

A blown head gasket will NOT lock the engine up, neither will it prevent the starter from turning the engine over, neither will it make gurgling noises..

Furthermore, head gaskets do not just blow, something caused the engine to overheat, you need to find out what that "something" was..

:wot: Hi there PaulT my friend, as James pointed out I was "diagnosed" to have Head Gasket Failure on my 75 with the KV6 engine BUT ... after a compression test all cylinders were healthy and NO HGF. Assume it's NOT until and unless its proven otherwise. Engine "siezure" cannot be attributed to head gasket failure, sound like a almost dead battery to me with the starter motor turning but not engaging. ;) Seems with Rovers Paul, anything even a flat tyre is down to HGF. A compression test will confirm or deny the HGF and, only cost around £35. to have checked.
1: A decent battery.
2: A new header tank screw cap at the correct pressure for the 1.8.
3: Check your plenums for water.
4: Finally, fill your cooling system with 50% correct coolant mix and check it after a short run, once its cooled down.
Also find a decent friendly garage near you and once found stick with them. Good luck my friend. Mike.
