Dear All,

I have a 2.0 Club V6 Auto which I suspect is undergoing HGF.

The car lost 3 litres of water and overheats after 30 minutes of 70-80mph cruising on the motorway. On normal roads, the water loss is not that apparant.

Radiator fan OK. Water pump OK. No physical leaks on the radiator/hoses.

Some loss of power. I think one of the cylinders have stopped working (water leaked into the cylinder, perhaps)?

No "white" deposits in the radiator but oil levels are high. I suspect its HGF.

I live in Manchester. Can anyone recommend a good and reputable garage to diagnose this problem around my area? Hopefully an honest Rover 75 specialist that knows about the car by heart and won't overcharge.

Could be a stuck and leaking T stat, very common on the V6, have you checked for water in the V ?

 Hi there Azmel and welcome, as one who also suffered a supposed HGF on my 75 Club KV6 I strongly suggest a compression test before undertaking any far more expensive procedures. This is minimal cost wise but at least it's the ONLY sure confirmation of any HGF. All the rest are pure guesswork; ie, `sniffer' up the exhaust, colouriser in the header tank etc, purely indicators and, in my experience, not good ones.
Should it prove to indeed be HGF, the less expensive answer is an engine replacement, I have the URL of a company who supply engines all below 50K miles with a full 12 months warrantee delivered to the UK market at around £800. Incl. VAT. and courrier cost. No I have no self interest whatsoever in said company. :) Simply 75 club members satisfaction. Cheers and good luck my friend. Mike.

I recently asked the same question, had 28 views on the thread but no replies, are there any members in the Manchester area who have their cars serviced by a reputable garage?

I can recommend "Chartiste" garage in Hyde. But like all good garages, they are busy, so you need to ring up and arrange an appointment really, but they do give breakdowns priority.. Phone 0161 367 8705..

But -- As Scribbler said, don't "assume" the HG failed just because it's a Rover!! The most common waterloss issue with these cars is the header tank cap leaks! it's a cheap easy fix so buy a new one first!! :p:

If the problem persists, then get a compression test done, that will remove all doubts.. Then please report back with the findings..

I stand to be corrected but if H/G had gone I think you would be looking at overheating issues within 15 mins regardless of driving conditions. As mentioned check in the V for thermo housing leak, possible airlock in cooling system, expansion tank. You say oil level high, is there signs of coolant mixing ?. There are a few common issues with the cooling system on these V6's so hopefully it will be something less serious. Fingers crossed for you.

HGF on the V6 is not un heard of but is not very common. To loose that amount of water, it's almost certainly the thermostat housing split........take the engine cover off and with a torch you'll see the water sloshing around in the V of the block.

Thanks guys for the advises.

I will indeed check the cooling system to find out where the water has gone, i.e thermostat housing or radiator cap.

Failing that, I will get the compression test done and see the extend of the damage to the HG, if at all.

I am also looking at another thread by kaiser on using Wondarweld. Could look into that too if it comes to that.

I will get back to you guys of my findings. In the meantime, any other advise are most welcome.

Check your cooling fan is working, it will be two or three speed depending on age, as a seperate issue check the plenum is not full of water.

do a search on here for both :)

This came up as there being no Rover garages within 500 miles of the M1
