Towing with a75

:)Hope everyone has come through the snow OK -it's a while since I was on here. Once again my 8 year old has come through the bitter nights on her original battery - WIth thoughts on the Spring I am consideing changing my caravan - I would like to hear from others who tow. I've towed My existing caravan to Switzerland and Cornwall from Leeds and haven't had too much difficulty - it weighs around 1300KG laden. Usually all the family go so this has been equal to 3.5 Adults on most occasions. In the future it could potentially be 4.

So looking around at caravans and bearing in m ind I have had my Eldis Knightsbridge for around 6 years it seems that most newer caravans of the same sort of spec are quite a bit heavier - around 1450Kg. SInce last year I have fitted the Rover Ron box that improves the torque so question is what limit can I safley tow a caravan with the Rover Ron box?

Is anyone on here towing with a caravan of around 1400KG and 4 adults with a Rover Ron box?

Hi Rob I dont believe that yow will have any problems I tow a Baily Senator Indiana which is 1500kgs and tows like a dream Max towing limit for the 75 is 1600kgs tow ball is 100kgs and you can put 100kgs on the roof there is no better tow car

It's been a while since I towed a caravan or indeed taught the towing course for the IAM but I always used the advice given by the Caravan Club and Institute of Advanced Motorists Rob, and I never had a problem from many miles of towing.

They suggest that the caravan, when ready to tow, should weigh no more than 85% of the car's kerb weight.

I have been towing caravans since 1967 and still am today I think that the caravan club and other reconmemd the 85% for beginners and is not a fast rule

Ron box, 1400kg, SWMBO 2-3 kids, and about 100-200kg of gear in the car and caravan. Tows a piece of cake, even with SWMBO on board :getmecoat:

Having changed from a vauxhall frontera to a 75 2.5 v6 I shall be taking our Fleetwood Colchester for an annual service on wednesday which will be the first time with a 75. I don't anticipate any problems. However a word of warning if a new towbar is fitted if its got a double socket. The instalation recomended is right under the car so unless the sockets are set about an inch or two lower then the plugs will not go in because the rear bumper is in the way. Fortunately I checked this before wednesday.

Car ..1999 cdt, caravan ...bailey Ranger/380/2. A fairly small 2 berth caravan.

Towed to southern Spain, and had trouble keeping the speed down to reasonable limits on the long straight roads. Surprised how easily 70 mph crept up on me , and it was a standard 116, no roverron then . Great car .

Worst problem .... Its a Moonstone green, and in the very bright sunlight, it loses colour,and appears silver (Ugh), so had difficulties finding it in the car parks ! :)

Thanks for the info. I'll check out - Looking around some later models we have been put off by the weight, but as you say 1600kg is quoted in the handbook - you have a lot of choice up to this weight. I think we will be looking up to 1450-1475Kg so from what you are saying it's no problem. I certainly feel better with the Rover Ron box. I see the VW Passat is is also 1600KG max laden weight too and you see plenty of these pulling big vans. I'll be starting my search this weekend - fancy fixed bed!:lol::smilie_re::band::band:
