Car.. Rover 75 diesel automatic connoseur estate 2002. approx 85000 miles

Hi All,

This is my first post ,having just joined up !
Last weekend my wife reversed the car about 10 feet back so she could open the doors to give it a good hoovering out.Car had been running perfectly up to this point, with two runs over to Germany and back via tunnel, earlier in the year.
A couple of hours later she tried to go out shopping, but the car decided that it was not to be so ! We got a dreaded EP display , and no start! This is shown where you get the P R N 1 2 3 4 display normally, above the digital mileage reading.

To cut a very long story short, is there any point me attemptting to fix this myself, or do we have to bite the bullet and put it into a garage for a computer interrogation ?

I have checked all the fuses , relays, looms etc for poor connection., and we even joined the RAC homestart in desparation. That was a complete waste of 40 quid as the RAC guy did not think that the problem was electrical and tried to activate the fuel pump to get us started. He could not even get the car onto his trailer as the tyres were too fat !!

To cover the obvious, diesel tank is half full ,battery is holding charge but at about 12.5 volts, which seems a bit low to me but may be normal ?
The small indicator lights next to the gear selector are not working which makes me think that we have a loose connection somewhere.... but where ??

Any bright ideas............please !!!

Welcome to the club and forum pentir.

One or more of our tech bods will be along to advise you, it's a bit quiet here at this time on Saturday, check back later or hang around and wander round the forums. Plenty to keep you occupied.

This is a new forum, but the earlier one is worth searching for previous posts.

This one seems to have been the dreaded ECU flooding problem:

Various points raised here:

Other owners have found that a failing battery can cause this fault (and many others). It would be worth re-charging or trying another battery. Your wife wasn't using a 12V car vacuum, was she? Maybe best not to mention it.

No need to go over to the .org space - First check your plenum chamber drains are clear as water ingress can cause havoc with the ECU residing in there. The clkub webiste has a datasheet on doing this and the link is here (http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/datasheets/tid002.pdf). Second, disconnect the battery for a hour or so to let everything power down and then reconnect it. This may wipe the error. Third, get a garage to plug TestBook in and check for faults.

Thanks guys,
I have opened up the plenum chamber which was nice and dry so no problemmmms there.
When the RAC guy was here we disconnected the battery for aboutb 15 mins then re connected. The EP display was still there, and engine would still not start .
The car is now at the local Rover dealer for its T4 diagnostic so I am sitting here dreading the verdict.

Fingers crossed it will not be a new gearbox !?

If it is a gearbox problem, Take it to a specialist.

I got a great surprise this afternoon as I walked back from my daughters school after picking her up.
There was a courtesy car waiting for me to take me up to the local garage to collect the car, which was fixed !
Fuse 34 had blown.
In my handbook this is listed only for the engine management system and nothing to do with the gearbox.
Lessons learned....
1. remove and check every single one of those pesky fuses before going to garage.
2. Dont trust the RAC man.
3. Dont trust the listings of fuses in the handbook, or the cover of the fuse panel, if you can see it!
Car is now purring again!
Thanks for your help.:)

But why did the fuse blow ?

Fuses may blow due to old age and manufacturing faults. If it happens more than once there is of course reason to be more suspicious.
