View Full Version : How do you take off the handbrake lever

Hi I was wondering how you take off the handbrake lever I've taken off the gaiter just can't get it off as I want to put my wood one on. Any answer is appreciated thanks Thomas

unclip the gaiter at the base and turn it inside out,you will notice it is retained at the handle by a rubber band.

twist the handbrake handle off the shaft.

Give it a really good twist will soon be free.

Cheers I gave it a hard twist and it came off I'm going to use double sided sticky tape but don't you find that the lever is slightly to long.ie it all works well but when you push the button it goes a bit in if you get what I mean thanks Thomas

the modded freelander version is a good colour match and it works,a fraction of the cost of a oem version..thats if you can find one

The freelander one is just a little bit longer but it's fine, the release button goes in no probs.

Can I just clarify before I attempt this!!!!!!!

The Freelander walnut handle comes with a plastic insert - this insert has to be removed before putting handle on the lever.....

Yes you need to remove this, mine was on solid so put in the microwave for 20 seconds to loosen up the glue.

Yep just worked out it needs removing!! Lol

I don't have a vice - can this be done using pliers (after the microwave!!)

I dont see why not, might be a bit harder to get off but you could always heat it for another 10 seconds.

if using the microwave method,don't over cook it as it will craze the finish

15 secs in microwave and came off with the pliers.

All done - looks great but still failing in loading pics - will sort soon.
