Hey all, After looking for the right car for over a year I finally found it in mid-june, been meaning to say hello for a while so here goes.

Got some pictures of the 75, hopefully they’ll work-

At the place where I bought it from Swallows Rest Car Sales in Shrewsbury, specialises in diesel 75’s, overall excellent service, would recommend, any other members bought from them before?

The old car just popping into shot, as my first car I didn’t really have anything to compare it to but in the year and a half I had it the only problem I had was the CD player stopped ejecting, a good honest reliable car the Almera was but otherwise nothing special and was bought in an inpatient ‘just passed the driving test, want a car, any car’ mind. Whereas with the 75 it took a while to get exactly what I wanted.

About this 75, owned by MG Rover for the first part of its life, presumably as a demo. 61K miles when bought, just over 63K now, good history serviced as it should be up until recently as the last 3 services were just oil and not inspection, the dash is calling for an inspection by 6000 miles but I’m currently in the process of doing as much of that myself to save money for retro-fits. Its a Connoisseur and ideally I wanted the SE but I’m also currently in the process of turning into an SE as much as possible. So far the parking sensors are in, not OEM just a cheapy set of eBay but working brilliantly with the little display placed above the mirror. Trip computer is due to be programmed by Austin Garages on Monday 23rd, and dipping mirror I plan to do September/October time ready for the darker nights. Rain sensing wipers and memory seats I’m not too fussed about and is at the moment too much to retro-fit for what they give. Thankfully it came with the Symphony and CD changer already however finding some old tapes and being able to play them again is nice, quality is pretty good too with the DD enabled.

From the start it had to be a dark blue, with Royal Blue being the favourite which is thankfully what this is, the Cream leather was also the favourite and again waiting paid off well. Interior is currently WIP with regards to to Handbrake gaitor and gear knob, i'm after a full Burl Walnut Gear knob to suit the handbrake handle kindly supplied from ebay by member PAB who also kindly wrote some very helpful instructions so thanks for that PAB.

When bought, the car had the classic MAF problems, unplugging it confirmed it and because of my age and insurance I can’t have any mods on the car so I had to go with the OEM Bosch MAF, I found it for about £77 just the MAF and no housing and all has been fine since.

The most annoying problem so far was the reverse lights not working, a quick search on here suggested the switch so I fitted a replacement and that worked for a few days and then they stopped again, tried another switch and they worked for a few days again, I took the switch out and pressed the button in manually and worked every time for every switch??? Which got me thinking of a problem inside the gearbox, but then when it stopped working after just the first engage of reverse I fiddled round with the connector and I could hear the parking sensors beep when the connector was twiddled so after visiting a few scrapyards to try to get a connector and wiring it up yesterday, all has been fine since but I kinda get the feeling it may just be the few days of normal operation I got before, but I’ll see soon enough if this has fixed it for good.

(One of my favourite angles to look at the 75)

Otherwise thats really all there is thats bad, everything is extremely good.
Thermostat could do with replacement but its not as bad as some I’ve read. Using the dash diagnostic display it spent most the time at 82 sometimes going to 83 and a maximum was 84. Most mpg was about 53 brim to brim with Millers added and new Pipercross air filter, on mainly A roads and B roads so very happy there as with a new ‘stat that could be more towards 56.

I recently bought the Land Rover PCV with the filter and plan to clean out the EGR as well, hopefully that helps push MPG up further.

Managed to track down a pair of Xenons from a breaker today so will be fitting them when I have the levelling sensors, BBUS, T4 and T1 activated washers, many thanks once again to member ROG for selling me the powerwash assembly and pump.

Which reminds me I found this “ http://landyspareparts.auctivacommerce.com/Discovery-2-Td5-YWK100110-Battery-sounder-P1171334.aspx “ And i’m hoping a member on here can confirm if this will do the job? The part number matched what I found from searching on here so hopefully....

Hi Mike, welcome to the club. Great looking car, especially the colour :drool4:.
Have a look at the top of the front springs to see if it has been fitted with spring protectors. See here http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=58446&highlight=spring+protectors
2002 may be outside the requirement dates, but I would source some and get them fitted. Just for peace on mind. Happy motoring.

Hey, thanks for the nice comments. Regarding the spring protectors i can't remember seeing anything like in the pictures in the link stevemac, but i found - "Affected Range: RJ 133300 to RJ 247257" and my number is RJ 250038 so i presume i'm safe?

As i expected i've already had a few comments about why i've got a car like this and people not believing its mine, but it gets attention for the right reasons not like a chavvy saxo deafening everyone would. For the money you get so so much with these cars and thats one of the main reasons why i wanted one at this age, just a bonus that it looks great and is set to be a classic.

It was pretty much even in consideration between the 1.8t and diesel, the HGF stuff didn't really deter me from the engine but in the end it was a diesel that was the right colour and spec. I don't think he really wanted me having a 1.8 turbo at this age though so my dad likes the fact its diesel most of all i think and is surprised how good it is, like Jakg's dad, he's probably a bit jealous that its in some ways better than his X-type which cost over 3x more. :D
