Having purchased my wife's V6 new in Nov 2000 I finally got round to changing the spark plugs yesterday after 84000 miles!
There was a small amount of oil round the base of the centre plug on the bank nearest the radiator. Has anyone seen this before?

Yes. It can come out around the plug if it has not been tightened correctly. Should not cause any problems, just requires doing up.
