From where exactly is the fluid escaping? Is it seeping out through the small diameter end of the rack rubber gaiter?

If it's offside, there are two metal pipes that go into the bottom of the column, so start with those.

Mike,

As a retired plumber you will know that fluid leaks can be hard to find. Start with the fluid deposit which you have already located. Remove the underbelly panel and inspect the surrounding engine parts meticulously. Look for obvious wet patches or oily smears. If it's all too dirty, wipe the hoses with a clean rag, paying special attention to unions, all the way from the reservoir to the pump and rack. Top up the system and go for a test drive. When you return put newspaper under the engine. Allow time for drips to form. Then inspect the underside again. If you're lucky, you'll see traces of clean fluid where the problem lies.

Simon.

Hi Mike, mine had a leak in the same area , turned out that the banjo bolt at the rear of the head needed tightening. Obviously workedloose over 70000 miles
