hi,
sent car in for clutch replacement to a1 clutches who informed me my box is knackered.
have managed to source a local unit for 100notes. however i have always preferred autos and would like to know if auto box will fit or are there to many alterations to justify.
i would imagine selector, interior trim and gearbox ecu will need swapping is there anything else?
also what oil goes into these and are 2.5 and 2.0 the same unit.

I don't know the answer but with modern electronics and interdependence I bet it's not nearly as simple as it sounds

... who informed me my box is knackered.
What are the symptoms of the alleged "knackered" gearbox?

Simon.

Interested to hear why as well. Not a common problem.

Swapping to auto would be possible but not practical I'm afraid.

It's just not worth the hassle. Finding an automatic car would be more sensible.

i take it the box was ok and was in as the clutch was slipping and you noticed problems with the clutch before they worked on the car ? if so then they must of done something to cause the problem with it ...

basically it started to crunch when downshifting from 3rd to second then i ccouldnt get 2nd when changing up then it started jumping out of first unless you held the gearstick there, when slowing down i.e. coming to a junction you can downshift into these gears if you time it right.
there is no problem selecting the gears so that rules out selector cables, the clutch pedal is behaving as it should so rules out hydraulics or m/s. and its not slipping on any amount of force.
tbh i am used to driving automatics for a while so if i were to swallow my pride it does stand a chance i may be the cause of the problem.
the gearbox i have sourced is from a rover breaker who said he has ten kv6 boxes and that there is no difference between 2.0 and 2.5 is that correct?:shrug:

it went to a1 clutches who are highly recommended on this site so i would imagine they are being straight with me..

hi,
are 2.5 and 2.0 the same unit.

Externally the same unit but final drive ratios are different according to this link.....

started hearing today when car is rolling, as in its in gear but no throttle applied going down incline. you can hear a dragging noise as if the brakes are on way out if you can imagine i would think the friction plate. i have been quoted 25pound would this end all my woes or shall i spend the extra 100pounds on a gearbox too. on the link above it states the final drive being different on 2.5 how would this benefit/hinder motorway drivng (slow it down/drive at higher revs doing 70mph).
sorry for asking loads of questions but really trying to get good understanding.

O.K., that's pretty conclusive evidence that there's a problem with the gearbox. :(

Incorrect. As Chris75 has said, although the gear ratios are the same for all the petrol engines, the final drive is not (4.410:1 for the 2 litre and 3.944:1 for the 2.5 litre).

Don't forget that a gearbox from a breaker is a gamble. You might end up with something worse than you have now. Have you considered taking your box to a specialist for overhaul? Better the devil you know ....

At 70 mph a 2.0 litre KV6 will be running at higher rpm than a 2.5 litre. The exact figure depends upon the size of your wheels and tyres, but the difference is about 2.3 mph per 1,000 rpm.

If you put a 2.5 gearbox into your car motorway cruising will be more relaxing but acceleration will probably suffer.
