Just wondering how many members tow a tourer. I have been towing caravans for over 50yrs but not all the time (Got that in before one of you do) and my first was a 14ft willerby with a solid fuel fire and a hardboard exterior. This is my outfit now.

I tow a 17ft Elddis to steam rallys etc. Planning on a trip up to Scotland this year. Last time I towed a 'van in scotland I covered over 2000mls in a fortnight!

So how do our cars tow?

I tow a 96 Swift Challenger (well, I did, but I haven't sourced or fitted a bar to the Rover yet). Going to have to watch my weight, as I'm going to be near 100% I'd say:

Caravans and camping. Been my hobby for few years. Had the use of a barn so collected anything -old- camping with the intent to get a museum going. Didnīt happen unfortunately. At the most, 9 vans and a trailer tent:o Plus many tents, from the 20īs onwards. Break point 1980.

When my large sons were small, holidays in UK and Denmark. One year 26 nights in our little Swedish SMV from 1964. Have 4 vans left. 2 from 1949, one from 1956 and one from 1965. The trailer tent is still there aswell.

Pic of son Robert (now 21) in western Scotland. SMV 10 1964 And my old Volvo with the SMV on the back

I hear what you're saying, but I never heard this about Mini's.....

Roverowner
26th January 2011, 14:34
Maybe not with minis as there isnīt so much weight. My SMV mentioned had 9 inch wheels and I had 2 blow outs with new tyres and innertubes. Guy in the trade said that the smaller the wheel the lesser the rubber on the road and less air in the tyre. On long journeys the small wheels can heat up because the rubber of the tyre is nearly always on the road/friction. This heats the air inside, that expands and ..... bang :o

.. and yes Iīve always had proper high speed tyres and inner tubes.

Yeah I suppose it has more to do with axle load rather than weight...

I'll have to get a pic of my Dads up. It's an 08 Ace Jubilee Courier 6 berth. Alloy wheels, Air con, BBQ point, Sky TV, iPod compat sound system and full awning. The best way to spend a holiday, promised:D Just one of the many reasons why I want a ZT-T, so I can tow it!

Oh yeah, and if you go fully serivced, you don't excrete in a bucket! Windrush will know exactly what I'm on about, what with the Indiana. About the only thing ours doesn't have is a motor mover. The only time we would like one is when pivoting it on or drive, you push up the slope and turn. It's the only reason why we can't have a twin axle van, as it won't pivot about the centre like ours does.

I'll take some pics soon. To get an idea, it's 24 feet long and white:getmecoat:

Your car will safely pull up to 1600Kgs and pull it well according to my matching guide, I doubt your van is more than 1400Kgs loaded. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I've checked the stats, the van has a 1470kg MTPLM, and a ZT-T CDTi will handle upto 1600kgs. But, we don't hit that loading for 6, I'll only ever load it for 4, with a 260kg payload, stick the awning in the boot and we'll be fine, as the noseweight is only 75 kgs, but the car can handle 100. Interestingly, all the aftermarket detachable swan neck towbars I can find are rated for 90kgs.

-To get an idea, it's 24 feet long and white-

Known in the trade as a mobile geriatric ward....;):D

No, each to his own. some people have a better standard in their van/motor home, than they have -at home-:o

For me there are 2 types of -caravanning- The tourers who like it small and handy. Get about easy. To explore the world. Then those who have a van instead of a summer cottage. Like to tour myself. Dinky and ingenious. The large vans are just too cumbersome on the roads and are more hard work than I want. Although a big van in a secluded country location would be good.

The small wheel thing is just heat/friction generated in proportion to the total volume of the tyre. The wheel bearing go like the clappers, also causing a lot of heat. My old vans have the old Austin A40 Devon type rims. 16 inch. Roll very well and roll over bumps etc much better than smaller wheels. A tear drop doesnīt weigh much so this type of problem is kept to a minimum.

I'd love a classic caravan too! But I'm not ready to give up the luxurys of modern touring yet! Yes, I admit, ours is a pain to move by hand, hence the need for good driving and especially low speed reversing. But when pitched up it's got just as much living space as a twin axle, but still more manuverable.
Like you say, it's each to their own:D

Sounds like a good idea. A place to swap horror stories, nice site details etc....
We tend to go to very quiet sites with the kids, usually private run ones. Once a year we go to one of the big ones, so the kids can have a nice time. Just booked 4 nights over Easter, at Porthmadog Haven, Super Pitch with mains water and drainage. Ģ40 for the 4 of us, which is very good.

Site prices have gone up a lot over the last couple of years, and with awning, leccy and kids, we sometimes end up paying Ģ40 per night!.

Thanks for the advice, you mentioned this last year some time. I did listen. It originally had 8" wheels. In the pic is a 10" borrowed from a friend. I now have my own 10" wheels in shiny silver, looks quite good:}.

10" wheels are the biggest that will fit on my teardrop due to the shape of the wheel arches. Looks much nicer than it did on the 8"s though:).

A couple of pics of my old Marauder, sold it about 18 months ago. Contemplated on something a little bigger as the 2 singles were bunk beds. Have borrowed a few, but it seems to take away the hitch up and go anywhere, even for the day. We took it with us for a week on many occasions without unhitching it once.

http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/Devilish_UK/tow2.jpg
I was picky about the sites we stayed at though, each caravan pitch had to have a hardstanding area, its own drains, water/phone/mains/satatile hookup, and grass that is grass, with no bare patches that used to be grass. Like one of my favourites below near Follyfoot, the premier pitches were divided by hedges.

If anyone ever needs any advice on caravan problems let me know. If I don't have the answer there is a forum just like ours with loads of experts.

Sounds like a thorough renovation. The -joins- are always a problem as the van moves about on the road and temperature changes, heat to ice, let water in. Thatīs why 2 of my old vans are made of fiber glass. No seams to leak;). No toilets in any of them. Every thing you need is -on site- these days. All you really need is a roof over your head, a bed, and the means of making a simple meal. Some storage for clothes etc is also good. My vans weigh about 350-400 kgs laiden. So there is no problems pulling them. donīt really need any -caravan- mirrors as they arenīt that wide plus they have got a line of sight all the way through the van:)

I havent towed my caravan for over a year now :( miss it greatly we don't have a tow bar on either car, the logical one to have one fitted to is our Freelander rather than the ZT.

Anyway, we have both made a promise to get out more this year.

Its a 1993 Swift Corniche, lovely van and only 12ft long.

Roverowner would you have a chat with the missus about all you need is a roof and bed etc, which is my feeling, because for some reason she likes to turn the awning in to some sort of harem/conservatory with wicker chairs and Persian rugs and candles! hehe :D

She even has a Hoover and I often find her hoovering up in the conservatory!

seems as though sheīs very house proud. Probably pining for the fjords:D -read a little cottage. For me itīs the simple life (no comments about me being simple Spencer:p:) Ache in your back for the first few days and then get used to it. Heavenly bliss when you get home to a real bed:D We have a dustpan and brush which gets used once a week but thatīs no big deal as the floor space is about 6 square foot;)

Thanks Andrew and all for looking into this for us. I'm more than sure that this would be a very popular thread as there are so many of us that own and tow caravans on this site. Not forgetting the guys who tow trailer tents and trailers with tents in them;).

Really look forward to seeing this if it gets off the ground:bowdown::bowdown:

Thought I'd put on a couple of pic's of my old towcar and caravan. I have only just bought a 75 as a replacement, hope it performs as well as the Sterling.

Ive a trailer, which I tow in a tent, can I be part of the gang also? :}

When the weather improves I must assemble it and spray the water barrier over it actually!!!

Ive been told im 100% aloud a caravan when we buy our own house/find a nicer rented house providing the thing doesnt block the front of the house. Shes not interested in caravaning holidays currently but I think local and regional holidays will be on the increase over next few years as we save for our first morgage.

Currently we have no where to store one sadly else I had my eye on several older style ones last summer.

Was thinking something like this myself...

The Eddis looks really nice. Mind you, you donīt really need a toilet unless you have bladder problems;). It was very cheap aswell. The problem, as allways, leaks. What ever you get, get it tested for leaks.

Trailer tents are fun:D

I had her for 7 years and put 60k on in that time. No head gasket worries, the only problem I had was a lambda sensor fault. Very nice car, until I lost it on ice..

Wow that was great looking car, and looked like you cherished it. Shame that it is now gone.

Sorry to the caravanners for hi-jacking the thread
