I believe they work, not sure how well.
If you have notebook the elm327 works really well and gives loads more info:)
A quick search on the bay will throw up a few and cheaper

i bought one the same off eBay and it works on my 2001 V6.It gives the Codes as a number but you get a list of codes and their meaning. It pinpointed a failed Cam sensor on a 2.5V6 for a friend of mine.

i bought one of those when i first started training ... have not got it now but it read engine codes only ,no abs ,air bag or gear box or display panel codes ,but it was good ,even turned the light off on a vauxhall frontia that the snap on wouldnt do :D

Cheers for the replies guys :D

In the end i plumped for a Maxiscan Ms509 after an evening of google research , it seems to give me a little bit extra.

The reason i started looking is that i think i am starting to suffer a coil pack failure as i get a occasional "funny five mins" and then its fine , hopefully the scanner will confirm this.
