ZT CDTI running problems

My mate has just bought a 03 plate ZT CDTI with issues it starts and runs fine up to 2k revs then it starts to "missfire" and blows smoke out but will not go past the 2k revs, turbo appears to spin up, he has disconnected the MAF no difference. Anyone any ideas please.

Choaked fuel or air filter?
Blocked inlet (EGR valve sludged up, or stuck open. Intake mod performed wrongly, opening sucking shut).

Whats the oil like? It will be black, but is it really thick and syrupy?

had the same problem right clean the egr vavle and the pcv filter plenty of info on here then if no better i suspect the under bonnet fuel pump anyway clean those bits 1st

is the smoke black sooty ?? if so would also be worth checking for split boost hose/intercooler seals. even the cooler itself as they are old now and some are badly coroded {leaking when boost starts to build up} as if it is will over fuel coming on boost causing black smoke, good luck.
