Hi,

Have seen a lot about this issue so some strong advice is needed as a bit confused as to what it could be, as I too have this tapping noise upon start up and slowly decreases after a few minutes, I opened the bonnet today to see where it was coming from and seems to be coming from the top right hand side of the engine next to the alternator and cam cover area, any good advice as to what this could be would be good :D..........

It's most likely to be the butterfly valves in your inlet manifold, either the vis motors are oiled up and need cleaning/reseting or the valves themselves are gummed up and seperated from the rod that works them.
If it's the vis motors it's not too much of a problem to sort out but if the valves have become seperated, you will have to replace the (not cheap), manifold!!!
There are threads to do all of this in the help section.
