18th February 2011, 13:09
Hi everyone.

Thanks to some sterling work by our new Argyll member Halcyon (Steve) we have a weekend meet set up for early April this year.

SATURDAY 9th and SUNDAY 10th APRIL 2011
The Cuilfail Hotel, Kilmelford, by Oban, Argyll, PA34 4XA

http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq129/derekosb/Oban%202011/CuilfailHotelA.jpg

The intention is to have a small road run up to Oban and the surrounding area on the Saturday afternoon, ending at the Cuilfail Hotel where rooms are available at the rate of £70 (twin/double) or £85 for the Family Room, both are Bed & Breakfast. Evening Meals are available in the hotel and sound fantastic.

The suggested route for Saturday is leaving Glasgow heading up through Dumbarton on the Loch Lomond road (A82), through Inverbeg, Tarbet, Crianlarich, Tyndrum on to the A85 to Oban.

http://www.leeds.ac.uk/english/staff/afg/pics/oban2.png

We will then head down to Kilmelford for the evening. Anyone from Argyll can meet at any point on the route or in Oban and anyone coming up from Glasgow or through from the East can meet at a suitable point on the run. Times and meeting points to be confirmed once we know where people will be coming from.

The Cuilfail Hotel (http://www.cuilfail.co.uk/)

There is a pub quiz on the Saturday evening in aid of the local Firefighters Charity with prizes which we can participate in.

On the Sunday we will have a "meet" in the Hotel Car Park (Steve has now confirmed that this is okay with the Hotel owners) and their is a charity car wash operating on the Sunday 1/2 a mile down the road at the fire station as well so the cars can be spruced up for the meet after the Saturday run. We then may take a run to Lochgilphead or Inverary before taking the alternative route home south.

So far we have 7 members confirmed as attending with 4 staying at the hotel. Steve (Halcyon) living next door will obviously not need to stay.

Hi Ronnie,

Not really got a time set as yet although I was thinking of after lunch to meet in the Dumabrton Asda that we have used for the Loch Lomond meets.

With you having a long journey when would you expect to be reaching the north of Glasgow/Dumabrton area and we could plan it out in a bit more detail?

Looks like there'll be a good turnout! Hope you all enjoy the weekend. (Nice photos, Derek!)

The car wash will actually be at the local fire station - which is all of half a mile away on the Degnish road (we can't really park the appliance in the pub car park 'cause if we did nobody would get in or out).

I'm sure there won't be any problem with having the Sunday meet in the pub car park - Simon and Yvonne at the hotel are really helpful people, and it'll be good business anyway. There's also plenty of space. (They recently hosted the Lambretta Club of Great Britain A.G.M. and there were about two dozen scooters outside; the scooter people - who are great craic - were talking about coming back later in the year.)

There's some decent ale on tap, including some good brown ale.

I can't promise rain (oh all right, I probably can) so if you want to make sure, by all means bring your own!

Let us know when/where the run's going from, Derek, and we'll meet you on the road.

All the best

Derek,
As we are away on holiday as its the kids easter holidays, I will not be able to come over.
If memory servers me right at Aird place in Oban, there used to be an Austin Rover Garage (even an Austin one before that), Wilsons who also had Garages in Dunoon and Sandbank. Think only Dunoon is Still open and just as a petrol station, though I have not been to Oban in years so maybe still there as a petrol station.Company was run by a few members of the Wilson Family, who I had the pleasure of knowing as a young lad, they were all lovely people and from where my love of Rovers comes from.

Hope the weather is good for you all, as it is a cracking part of the country when the weather is fine.

Er... with reference to the post about gas stations, there are three petrol stations in Oban, one at Tesco's and two on the A816 Oban-Kilmelford road (one of which shuts on Sundays). There's also a 24-hour one the "Halfway House" on the A85 just East of Dunbeg about three miles before Oban.

No-one should run out of gas!

If anyone else wants me to book a room for them, just let me know - I live next to the hotel and can do so easily.

Yes, is the short answer. Intention is to meet at the Asda car park in Dumbarton again and drive up to Oban for a look around, have a few scenic stop offs en-route (Crianlarich (Saturday), Rest & Be Thankful (Sunday) etc) and getting to the Hotel late afternoon or thereabouts.

I am working on the timings and following up the possibles and will post suggested timings shortly.

Aiming to meet at Asda,, Dumbarton around 12:00 on Saturday if you can manage that?

Proposal is to meet at Asda, Dumbarton at 12:00

Leave Dumbarton and follow A82 (through Inverbeg, Tarbet, Ardlui) to Crianlarich.

Meet up with East Coast Convoy at Crianlarich at 13:30/14:00 in the Crianlarich Railway Station car park which is just on the outskirts of the village.

Follow the A82 to tyndrum, then taking the A85 to Oban (passing through Dalmally and Bridge of Awe) aiming to reach Oban for 15:00. (77 1/2 Miles from Dumbarton) Photo opportunities and a wee bit of shopping probably;

All timings are approximate and subject to change if we spot anything we want to stop and photograph:D:D

Then head down to the Cuilfail Hotel in Kilmelford for 15:30/16:00.

For those unable to make it on the Saturday (or like me can't stay overnight) the proposal on the Sunday is again to meet at Asda, Dumbarton. This time at 10:00.

Proposed route on Sunday is to follow the A83 up to Oban instead to take in The Rest & Be Thankful (photo op) and Inveraray although this will depend on numbers coming up on the day.

The intention was the run home would be via Inveraray and the Rest, however that is open for debate if anyone has any particular preference.

Sunday 10th, intention is to have a "Meet" in the hotel car park from 12:00, and possibly get the cars washed at the Fire Station (charity car wash day) just down the road.

If members can let me know if they want to join the road run so we know who to expect and don't wait all day for someone who is not coming;), or leave before a member makes it:p:.

As always, any suggestions welcome.

Steve (Halcyon), do you want to meet up with us in Oban somewhere and if so where do you suggest. (perhaps you can PM me your mobile number so we text when nearby:})

Derek

Hi George,

It was mentioned early on that Ronnie would be able to meet us at Asda, Dumbarton to do the run up to Oban. I had suggested 12:00 but had not confirmed a time until last night.

I was therefore waiting for Ronnie to confirm that he would be able to meet us at 12:00 before adding him to the rendezvous list.

So, Ronnie, is 12:00 at Asda, Dumbarton okay for you? :}

Cheers,

Just a thought - it seems as though some of you are going to go via Arrochar. This means that you'll be passing through Inverary. If you're considering going to Kilmeford via Lochgilphead, my advice is - don't. The road surface between Lochgilpead and Kilmelford is, in places, atrocious - there are some real "tank trap" potholes and there are stretches where patches have been put on patches on top of...at several ponts, it's really bad. However, if you turn right at Inverary towards Dalmally you go over the hill and in 15 miles you can turn left onto the A85, coming through, eventually, Oban and following the A816 south for Kilmelford. It's not pothole-free, but it's much better and it only adds about five miles to the journey. (And it could save you a tyre/wheel/shock absorber etc.)

If you like I can meet you at Inverary - we'd like to take a bimble out and run back with either the Glasgow or Edinburgh runs; I can make Inverary just as easily as I can make Crainlarich. Let me know.

(Another "heads-up" - the poilce are mounting a campaign locally to catch people speeding through the villages - not that 75/ZT club members are anything less than law-abiding, of course!)

All the best

Hi Steve,

Hi Steve,

Cheers for that.

The Arrochar/Inverary run is on the Sunday for those not staying overnight (me) and only coming up on the Sunday for the afternoon meet.

If you want to come down on the Sunday, with any of the other members as well, for a run back up from Inverary that would be great. At the moment there may only be 3 of us coming up on the Sunday, possibly 4 if Franco or any others can make it.

You would then be able to guide us up the best road. The idea was photo opportunity at the Rest and Be Thankful.

Just back from the meet as we stayed another night .

Excellent turnout considering the distance .

The weather has been mentioned in other posts and just let me say that 19c on both days was a total FREAK .
It stunned even me :D:D.

Every car was beautifully turned out but i have to mention GRAHAM,s motor !!!.
What excellent condition it was in , that car looks as if it will still look that way in 20 years :bowdown:.
Excellent organization as per by DEREK and MR & MRS HALCYON :D:D.

Anyone going to OBAN get yourself to NORIES [note spelling] for the best haddock in batter going .
After the meet we noshed on ice cream with DEREK and ROTREX on the dockside then strolled along the front munching on haddie in crispy batter with TAM [rotrex].
Annmarie and i went to a rather snooty hotel on the sunday night for our evening meal and had scallops to start and king prawns for mains and they came very close to the best we have ever had , this joint was so posh it even had diecast racing cars in the gents and the WERN'T GLUED DOWN :p::p:.

Anyhoo thanks to all for a great meet and stunning views .

PS it chucked it down with rain today in OBAN and we got royally soaked

This is just to give our apologies for not being able to meet more of you all on the Sunday - Ruth and I had to go to the car wash at the fire station (and yep, we're not fussy and will wash anything!).

Good to hear that you all had a good run home - hope nobody fell foul of the local potholes.

The weather was freaky for the weekend, wasn't it - sunshine? In Argyll? Normal service was resumed today, though -we had hail this afternoon.

To those of you who failed to score ten out of ten in the final round of the quiz - that'll be all of us, then - I can only apologise. The previous nine answers having been "Rover", one might have been forgiven for thinking that the answer to the tenth question: "What is a popular name for sheepdogs (it's also a famous make of car)?" would also have been "Rover". I cannot understand how it came to be "Jag" - though it might have had something to do with the make of car our Crew Commander (and question setter) drives - he is unenlightened, and drives a lesser vehicle.

Hope you all had fun, though.

It's good to see some of the pics of the run on the thread - well done to the photographers! Wish I'd taken my camera.

It was great to meet you all. We'll see you at Falkirk, if not before.

Very best wishes,
Steve and Ruth

Hi Steve and Ruth,

Many thanks for all your help in setting this weekend up and look forward to seeing you again at the SARR, although by the sounds of things it will definitely not be in the P5B:(

I thought that, but I'm Bristolian and we make the Scots seem generous.

BTW, on the cost of petrol, if it goes up any more I'm going to convert the 75 to run on HP Printer ink.:getmecoat:
