Net Spiders

I clicked on the "Who's-on-Line" link for this forum. I saw the names of members and guests on line (normal). I also saw the following on line too:
-Yahoo Slurp Spider
-Google Spider
-MSNBot Spider
What are these spiders (as they were all looking at user profiles)?

The spiders gather information for their search engines, e.g. search for majedm on google. :)
