looking at this list now and assuming someone will make some soon, there may be some "rare" cars left out there without the kit...
In 2009 will we all be retro-removing our retrofits?:D

I think that is the MK1 version, the Mk2 is a much closer match.

Like I said, it might be the case that other makes have an accessory that will do the job! I still think there is some mileage in this idea - even if the PT is not the right 'donor'...

Hi.

Thanks for the prompt reply, very grateful. One more question if I may!

I'm a member of the Rover 75 &MG ZT Owners club at http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk

Could you possibly put me in touch with the manufacturer of the MGR Part # VUB104150 - Door Finisher ?

We have 150+ club members ready to purchase this item so if the manufacturer would be interested in a re-make deal, we have a fair sized minimum order waiting.

Regards,

Rich Kavanagh

You do realise Rich that, that is where we started on this quest 8 months ago and got nowhere.
You have pretty much repeated the request apart from at that time we had the Xpart representative to deal with directly.
Furthermore, we do not have 150 members ready to purchase these items. There are 125 names on the list for 143 sets. Many of these will have sold their cars, are no longer interested, may not want to pay the price when they come on stream or have simply changed their minds.

then surely isnt it now the time to revisit the list (club has the power to email them) and seek whether people are prepared to put money where there mouth is to create purchasing power in the hands of a reputable club? Say 100 viable x £20 is a couple of thousand that I cant imagine a company is going to be sniffy about. Its not a particularly complicated moulding and we know how easy they are to procure as a specimen...??

just a thought...

Having had some experience in Injection Moulding the tooling alone would be around the £5k mark. An alternative would be to have an insert made that would fit inside an existing mould tool, possibly for as little as (a guess here) £5-600, but that require the owner of the tool to allow its use.

Quotes from Xpart representative:-

The story so far....

...we have contacted the people who used to make this kit for us. The tool has been packed away but we believe it still exists.

At the moment they want us to order a minimum of 5,000 sets at £32.50 each. Our overheads for getting a part into stock, storing it, administration and then shipping it out are 23% on average, meaning I would have to sell these at £42.20 to Premier who despatch all web orders. They would expect to make 20% which now takes the retail to £52.76 (plus VAT = £61.99).

Personnally that makes me think we will struggle to sell to all of you guys let alone any one else who just quite likes their 75/ZT.

The reason we have been quoted for needing to buy 5,000 is that they have to print 5,000 of the fitting instructions. Fitting by the way looks pretty obvious, so at the moment we have gone back to them and asked whether we can have alot less sets if we forget about the instructions.

We have yet to hear back from them, but you can see why we don't currently have any in stock when suppliers expect us to take on unreasonable quantities for an unknown demand.

Thanks,
Ben Charity
XPart Product Manager

At the Moment our MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) is still at 5,000 sets, so whilst the 56 requests on here are a fantastic start, I still need to get the MOQ down to around 500 or less before I dared order them.

We are asking the questions of the supplier as to whether we can have less if we make do without the instructions, without the box and without the little cleaning cloth that you are supposed to clean the area with.

They think they have the mould that makes them, but still have not found it yet. £32.50 was the cost price to XPart for an MOQ of 5,000 and normally when you ask for less that goes up, but seeing as we are suggesting going without the instructions etc.. here's hoping that cost comes down.

Thanks,
Ben Charity
XPart Product Manager

The last quote to us was £30.50 and that is for 300 sets, 75 sets in 4 boxes.

The parts will all be loose in the 4 boxes seperated by protective material, but the sticky backing is not even included.

As a bare minimum I am still going to have to source the sticky backing and get them all put 4 in a box, in protective packaging.

XPart Cost £32.50
XPart Net to Premier minimum based on 23% overheads = £42.21
Retail from Premier at 15% margin for Premier= £49.66
Shop Retail Inc VAT = £58.35

And this is without factoring in how much it is going to cost me to get them into their own boxes, the cost of said boxes and the cost of the sticky backing. These questions are still being asked.

Just thought I'd keep you updated.

Ben Charity
XPart Product Manager

The latest news is that I am currently asking around other suppliers to see if I can get these made cheaper elsewhere.

If we use the current supplier we are looking at £70 retail by the time I have got the sticky backing on and got them all boxed up.

Thanks,
Ben Charity
XPart Product Manager

That was the last post on the Dark Side (2/6/2006) from Xpart on the subject and are notable only by their lack of communication.
If you wish to take up the cudgel with them, then go ahead and the best of luck locating the original manufacturer and the tooling. Xpart have failed and they allegedly know who the manufacturer was.

In the mean time one of our members has sourced a supplier and a prototype sample has been forthcoming. There are still some details to clear up but we are hoping that we will have some news in the near future. It may not be the news you all want to hear but that remains to be seen.

I don´t need to , dealer fitted nearly everything the car should of had, ex display model, didn´t even want us to take it outside incase it got dirty,,, but i remember from when everyone wanted some when we were on .org forums......compared with what the true price of these were, yes it is mad ,for four shiny pieces of metal that took no time at all to produce....

Buy a 75 take off the door finishers, then sell it on..http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/newfeather/atlanticblue2.jpghttp://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/newfeather/reddieselcdt.jpg

Not sure if this is a goer but you can never tell.

I've taken a look at all the other parts this chap has up for auction and ALL the parts he has up fo sale are really inflated and no bargains to be had - I think in many cases the prices verge on the cost of new parts - if not exceed?!?

£20 for a S/H battery box cover?? Almost £100 for a S/H Union Alloy and tyre?? There are many more such examples

I am doing, I like it but its just so different to the 75, handles very different. I need a ron box though as its only 120bhp. But still feels quicker than the 131 cdti due to it being lighter and a manual box.

I have a cousin who manufactures plastic extrusions and when we met yesterday after a Funeral at Burton on Trent, we got to discussing Door Handle Finisher Kits, as you do! I showed him the job required on my ZTT and of the type of finish needed but of the 5 75's in the car park, not one had the kit fitted - truly rare!. The outcome is that he can make the item - with a metallic finish in many single colours - but needs either the original build dimensions and profiles - not very probable, or access to a vehicle to make resin moulds of the door handle depression in order to manufacture the tools for the extrusion and trial fittings of the ones that he produces.
Problem - he lives in Derby and I live in Perthshire!!! Is there a member who would be prepared to let my cousin 'play' with his car to get the profile mocked up and for eventual trial fitting of the 'cups'? I am in a position to send him the image of what we want as the final item but either an existing 'cup' or a vehicle for a trial would suffice.
We did not mention costs but the numbers in our lists of some 150 sets would pose no problems. I see the 'suggested' tooling costs above but can't see my cousin charging anything near to that, eventual retail cost would have to be worked out but I would love this chance to be taken up. He did ask about how they might be attached and I said that should not come in to the costing as this has been discussed on the forum. Can anyone come back to me with a pm on this or if the mods/owners would prefer it this could be continued off list, but definitely worth pursuing?

This is fantastic news! - if we cannot get a finisher to copy and nobody wants to use their car door as a guinea pig then I wonder could a few of us band together and buy a scrap door?

Then Martin's cousin could spend as much time as he needs during the design/manufacture process.

Well - I had not thought about actually getting a door!!! but what might a real scrapper cost, I'm sure that one could be sourced.
Cousin's Business premises are in Abbey Street, Derby, just on the city side of the inner ring road, all his gear is there of course but he naturally travels to his other contacts, (although retired, he keeps his hand in making Cylinder heads etc. for vintage Maserati racing cars etc., and so is a very adept engineer, to those who know of it - he made the 'Florentine Boar' now in the Arboretum Park, Derby).
Simon D. - I'll phone him and see if he would be prepared to trek to Lichfield, it's only 22 miles after all.
All - please 'watch this space'

Can only add that I tried for months to get a door finisher to copy without success. I eventually cut one off my own car.
As to A door with recess (or piece cut out with it) we allready have this in the clubs possesion AND a final, finished, chromed finisher that fits it.
However GG will confirm from his efforts, the concaves on each door vary so, one size does not fit all.
Right at this moment I am devastated, thoroughly frustrated, as it is project that has taken considerable effort by me and GG and in a well worn phrase is, SO NEAR YET SO FAR.

The slight difference in the door recesses is possibly taken up by the 1.5 mm.
thick double sided foam strip that attaches the door finishers to the door.
I had door finishers fitted to Cowley built 75, and a Longbridge 75, and also a Longbridge built facelift 75,
I believe these were all the same model of finisher, so maybe one size does fit all.

I think it is perfectly believeable to assume it is a "one size fits all" - whilst acknowledging that not all recessed will be identical. I suspect the design allows for this by use of such as teh double-sided foam/tape to pick up and slack.

Hang in there Crofts whne there is a will there is a way ;)

The original plastic finishers are manufactured to a wide tolerance and will therefore fit all doors without issue.
There are however minor differences between the door pressings consequently a "precision" made metal finisher will only fit correctly in the recess it was designed for.

I'm wondering if it is going to be worthwhile now, I have spent 100 miles today going round scrappies whose only response was 'we never see them any more' - 75's / ZT's I mean. So I am still 'door less' and 'finisher less'. However the problem escalates somewhat I think, are the members expecting Metal Door Finishers? Having never seen one / any I assumed that they were Plastic. I am not in a position to even consider the manufacture of metal ones, so if members were anticipating Metal ones, would they still want Plastic ones? If the list goes down by 50% then the financial viability goes down, can we reassess this and how much would members be prepared to pay for Plastic ones?
If we are to continue with this exercises would it be possible to 'borrow' the Club's Finisher mentioned above by Crofts if is a Plastic one?

Having never seen one / any I assumed that they were Plastic. Some of the "chrome" bits are plastic i.e. chrome mirrors.

I wouldn't have a problem with them if they were plastic so long as the fit was good. I will say again, though, that its probably best if you get a finisher to copy.

cant wait to fix them permanently but I am willing to loan one out as long as I am adequately insured - they cost me a packet, and they are the Rarest of the rare items, and I get it back asap.

dont know if you have ever seen one, but I was quite surprised they are not simply dishes they are actually sculpted or moulded with a lipped recess on the reverse that takes up the double sided adhesive tape, and they are shaped at each end to fit slightly under the door handles -

some pics to illustrate -

Hello, mad4it,
These pictures are very useful, I shall pass them on to my cousin to see what he thinks of the actual item rather just having seen where they will end up.
A few questions:
What material are they made of?
When placed on to the car how slack are they?
Are they 'identical', they should be of course being from a single mould, and am I correct in that they are in no way handed, any one will fit any door?
The profile seems to to be a compound shape but from what I know of engineering, I would think that they could be copied fairly easily.
The offer of a loan to copy is most generous, I believe that this will be the way to go, but it may be a week or so before we will be in a position to progress to moulding so we'll be in touch again if we may?
Safety of the item to be copied would be assured!!!

Hello, mad4it,
These pictures are very useful, I shall pass them on to my cousin to see what he thinks of the actual item rather just having seen where they will end up.
A few questions:
What material are they made of? Chromed plastic
When placed on to the car how slack are they? The adhesive tape ensures they are stuck fast no slack or movement.
Are they 'identical', they should be of course being from a single mould, and am I correct in that they are in no way handed, any one will fit any door? All four are identical.
The profile seems to to be a compound shape but from what I know of engineering, I would think that they could be copied fairly easily. Back engineering the original and making a tool for injection moulding will not be the easiest of tasks but for an expert it will just take some time.

The offer of a loan to copy is most generous, I believe that this will be the way to go, but it may be a week or so before we will be in a position to progress to moulding so we'll be in touch again if we may?

Copyright only refers to literature or the arts.
It could be covered under Intellectual Property Rights.
Patent - Very little chance - not a new product or inventive.
Registered Design - If so would have 25 years protection in UK
Design Right - If so would have 15 years protection in UK
Would be surprised if they are covered by any restriction as they involve ongoing costs & administration, which if established, will have almost certainly lapsed with the demise of MGR.

GreyGhost
15th October 2007, 19:18
The original manufacturer of this part owns the patent and or design rights and allege they will pursue any infringement of those rights by a third party.

Morning all...

If I've missed this somewhere in the deluge of posts on these lovable, albeit almost extinct little critters, I appologise now....

SORRY... there done...:)

What where the original finishers made from?...
Were they all the same size?..
Are they chrome plated?...
And......
If they were to be made in very small quantities...would anyone notice...???

Not that I would do such a thing... :getmecoat:

If they are of a base metal or such, I may have an idea to make these cheaply....ish..

Dont all start sweating, its just an idea and may have been tried before :(

As Arnie would say..."I,ll be back".....;)

Either plated or chrome coloured plastic, certainly very high quality.
And......

Only if you were to tell people they are available. :)

Friend of mine is/was a jeweller...
many a time i helped in molding a piece of fancy gold/silver in jewellers rubber, make a wax copy, alter it... make a plaster mold and bobs your proverbial...

was thinking of putting my signature on mine....if it worked..which is a long shot...and slow for the masses...:twonk:

but.... with the right contact in electro chrome plating, once you have a few the price isnt too bad....

like I say just an idea at mo,but working on it.....

I am given to understand from the recent posts on Crofts behalf that some progress has been made on the chrome plated brass type, quite what I have no way of knowing.
I'm sure Crofts will keep everybody advised of his progress.

There may be other avenues being explored by other members but that at the present time is just conjecture on my part.

Might NAC-MG bring them back into production for the MG7? This could be a potential source of new ones.

If they do there will be a ready market at least on this forum for them. No reason for them not to be available from the usual sources I would have thought.

After a long wait got a call today to say the finishers have been modified to fit the door that Les so kindly lent us.
(To explain. The finishers originally produced fitted perfectly to the piece of door cut out and sent to me originally. However for some reason unknown they were not an exact fit when tried on our actual cars though were acceptable. Lets hope we have got it right now.)
Will go to Newmarket tomorrow to have a look.

Please add me to the list on the following proviso:

1. The cost (for 4) is reasonable (i.e. about £20 for the set).

2. They would fit a 2001 tourer

2. Doors didn't change from 99-05, nor between models, so should be OK.

3. The originals were fitted with double sided tape so I assume the same could be used for the new version.

The original mass produced sets cost £45 + five years ago so I wonder how achievable your price point will be.

My personal opinion (from a totally no-involved view) - a price of around £60+ per set would be great value for money, if achievable, though realistically we may have to pay more.

The production and sale of these items is in no way connected to the club, our only involvement is to keep this list going for the use of potential suppliers.
Crofts is in sole charge of supply and costings, hopefully when he has them for sale all your questions will be answered. Until that time all else is speculation.

Good job Crofts and we sincerely hope you can get these out to the members soon.

Here are 3 views of the modified finisher, in brass. Don't worry about that, the chrome finish will be superb.
As with the O/E plastic finishers there is flexibility to move the finisher slightly up for a flush finish at the top, or to centralise it. In place, the finger slides from bodywork to finisher smoothly. I add this as someone asked before if there was a sharp edge. There is not.
This finisher is affixed with a good quality double sided tape, Henkel/Unibond No More Nails. I bought it from Homebase in a pack containing 12 strips 19mm x 5cm. The same product is available in a roll of 19mm x 1.5 metres. The removable film is RED. (Homebase and my local small B&Q did not have the rolls) Warning :- it is instant grab (as with the O/E finishers) so initial positioning is critical.
As many of you will know, I had to cut 1 finisher off my car as a sample. I have reaffixed it to my car with silicone and in my opinion this is preferable. It is easy to position accurately and a good quality (clear) silicone goes 'off' very quickly.
I am 100% sure that the chromed finishers here will give an appearance that matches the plastic ones. Chrome on brass is a superior product to plastic.........and the chrome will not rub off !
The only thing wrong with the previous finisher was that it touched at the bottom of the dish, so holding it proud. In actual fact that 'model' fitted the door section that was cut out and kindly sent to me by Reclamet breakers perfectly but when GG tried them at home on his car found the above.

This is a project I started in April 2006 in response ONLY to a need by members for a product that was no longer available from Rover. I have had finishers on my car since I purchased it new in 2003.
I mention this only as recently there have been pointed remarks that I am doing this as a 'Product', that the club is divorced from my efforts, and that it is hoped " I get a return" from a product I am making "for the public".
Right from day 1 I had absolutely no intention of selling the finishers for more than bare cost. I have added NOT ONE PENNY for my time, mileage, phone etc. etc. contrary to suggestions. I am retired, have time, am a determined type and have had so much pleasure out of the club/s that it was something that I wanted to do in return. Trust you will all understand this.
Anyway back to facts.
The finishers are £29.50 ex factory. ( I have to order in batches of 50)
+VAT £ 5.16
Estimated P&P £ 2.50
TOTAL £37.16 (set of 4 chromed finishers delivered to members.)
Delivery is 2 weeks from placing order. Allow me 1 week to pack and post so you should receive them + - 21 days.
As you will see the price does not include any adhesives. I leave it to members to decide whether to affix with double sided tape (about £4.75 for strips or roll) or silicone, which is freely available.
I have to put money up front with my order.
PAYMENT :- There is PayPal, which would add 4% to the above price, or, by cheque to me by post with your address details for posting. A suggestion of a bank transfer with me supplying my details by PM to you, I think, is unworkable as I cannot ask my bank for daily statements to check deposits.
I WOULD VERY MUCH WELCOME YOUR SUGGESTIONS TO ALL THE ABOVE

That's very kind of you Les, had every intention of returning it in 'original' condition but events overtook me at the factory and we just had to try the 'things'.
Feel on a high at the moment not least because John gave me a couple of hints on how to post photo's AND I SUCCEEDED TODAY.
Just wish I was one of these youngsters that finds computing so easy ! !

Well done Crofts..
Will the way to buy them be to pm you for your address and then to send you a cheque and your own address.
Or am I jumping the gun and you have a system in place..

Dave T

Thanks for that Dave. Thought I would hold off a while and see what members think. I don't have a system in place and am rather floundering at the moment.

GG/ Kandyman. Could you please add members names as they come up. many thanks.
Do we stick to the list for priority or first come first served ?
Just wonder if everyone will see my post. Think I will start a thread to draw attention.
