Hi All,
Just in case this is not known a shim is available which is fitted at the base of the Cylinder Liner which raises the liner high by .003 and therefore over comes the low Cylinder Liner height problem if and when it may arise.
It is available from www.ukmgparts.com
Hope this information is of assistance and for those already in the know just carry on with your knitting.
There is an excellent thread on the other side from a Norwegian member there showing detailed pictures of his repair which makes excellent reading and show what can be done to ensure a good repair to 1.8 if a Head Gasket problem should arise. Thread link http://forums.mg-rover.org/showthread.php?t=406154
He was somewhat let down by the supplier of the replacement Cylinder Head which turned out to be of poor quality. However he seems to have mainly overcome this problem and his car is running well.
Regards,
Telfer.

PS Sorry for mentioning the other side but it is a good example of what can be done to ensure a good standard of repair. Also it illustrates and details the insides of the K Series 1.8 very well indeed, and thought it would be of benefit to members of this Forum. T.

Excellent post !
This was fascinating reading . Two elements are covered, the potential manufacturing issues with the K16 head in the PPC article , and the poster's epic rebuild job. This is a must-read for everyone with K16 head issues , and of great interest for anyone :}
Most of the manufacturing issues used to be discussed some years ago , before the k16 in its 1.8 form was fitted to the 75 , but they have sort of been forgotten in recent years with the focus on coolant leaks .
A long read , but well worth it :}

Hi there,
Glad you found it of interest and as you say an essential read for all 1.8 owners.

I use them a fair bit, and they are a good product, and not had any issues with them yet. Often it's been the only thing to keep the car on the road rather than fitting another engine.

Update to this thread.

Liner shim LCJ000050SHIM supplied by Brown & Gammon measures actually .004" thick and not as described above.

Verified by imperial micrometer and feeler gauge with engineering straight edge.
