Hi All,

Set off from Northampton to South Wales today, Got to the M4 junction near Newport and hit horendous Queues, After about 20 mins of crawling along, steam started to pour from under the bonnet, Temp guage went through the roof :(
Called the RAC (2 hours wait) he checked every thing and anounced the Fan was not working    I seem to remember from previous threads that these are a problem to get,

Managed to get home, let it cool and when traffic was clear ran for home :D

I have a warranty and am covered, will take car to garage tomorrow - what am Ilikely to be faced with ???? are fans or parts available ???

Car is 2.0 ltr v6

Peter

Mine is 2.0 v6 as well. The fan motors etc are very difficult to get hold of - had mine replaced 2 weeks ago but I had to buy it myself (and hand it to the fitter) as garages seem reluctant to sell these to each other!!!

There are threads here covering repairs etc - but it depends on the year.

Could cost anything from £80 - £340 + labour; some appear on ebay occasionally. If you have a warranty fine - as long as your policy covers for it and the dealer can get one for you.

Thanks Karl.

I thought as much!!!:(

Think you want to make sure they check the head gasket(s) and thermostat housing as well as do the fan, especially after it has overheated.
Fans can be found, it depends on how determined they are to find one (mine has just had a new fan under warranty).
Good luck

My 2.5 ztt fan was gone when I got the car.I am pretty sure a new one was located from wh brand in Spalding Lincolnshire.May be worth a try.

Good luck with this Peter.
My fan failed last week.
Saying new ones are hard to find is an understatement !
I ended up getting a used one from the scrappy, not ideal I know, but at least the car is back on the road.
If you end up taking this route yourself, be sure to ask them to test the fan before you buy !

If fans are such a big problem, would it not be possible to fit an after market fan say Kenlowe or something like that. Even if it runs at a high sped only?

When mine was replaced a couple of months ago, my local ex dealer ordered the fan and it arrived the next day. He told me there was no problem getting it.
My original was the 3 speed, and they replaced it with the later 2 speed resistor type.

Been to garage today, and they can get the temp guage to go off the dial but not overheat, they have checked the fan and it works (hot wired it ), so I am now getting it checked by a specialist electrical place, they think the thinging that tells the fan to come on is at fault.
They think the over boil was air in the system, after it had boiled over and the RAC refilled and got any air out we could get the dial to over heat but the car would not boil over - strange
Hopefully after a full diagonostics next Monday I will have the answer.
I will keep you upto date they say they have had a simular one to this recently!!!
Wish me luck

Thanks for all your replies if it is the fan sounds like a 50 /50 chance as to wether I have issues getting one

Sat last night and considered changing car, but after sitting in hertoday, realised just why I could not get loose her, There is no other car on the road that looks and drives like my 75.

Garage say fans works, but is it on all speeds??
Still sounds like the low and medium fan speeds are duff.
Fan will become intermittent as the brushes wear out.
(motor might not turn one day but it will the next due to airflow of your travelling speed "nudging the motor round to a different part of the commutator where it will then spin on it's own)

Needs to go on a T4 testbook to be sure.

A kenlowe could be the answer and I'm working on the wiring so it will replicate the original speeds, so it will be as inteligent (if you can call it that!) as the original system.

But this little project problably won't help you in the time.

Jules, never mind intelligence, here we need brute force:D

Just some random thoughts…

Sounds like we just need a decent (read, reliable long life) single speed fan with two decent dropping resistors to provide the three speeds.

I note that some of the later BMW ones are open wound wire coils, fitted loosely inside ceramic holders.

Alternatively a coil can be wound from say, 8 gauge fencing wire with suitable taps placed at the appropriate points to provide a voltage divider network. I have made these in the past and you require surprisingly little wire to achieve sufficient resistance. They are also very robust. Dividing the voltage would be a lot cleaner than using a brute force resistive network not to mention more efficient. The actual resistance of the divider network is also irrelevant to the voltage wanted so it could be any value really.

It may be possible to mount a carefully chosen after market fan motor on the existing frame and possibly even modify the existing fan blades to fit although I haven’t investigated these options much as yet. Just thinking about it a bit…

Sorry guys – just rambling

I'm working on everything you mention Kiwi:oh you:

What I have found though is the resistance is quite critical if 1 or 2 different speeds are required.

Doh, sorry Jules - I was just having some idle thoughts in my dotage. I will catch up with the play eventually. :o
