I've looked at the threads but can't find a photo or a "How To".
Is it as easy as simply cutting the intake off after the corrugated section or is there more to it?
Apologies in advance if this is a particularly naive question!

Yup, its that easy. You want to leave one corrugated section (so its like a trumpet).

Just undo the 3 nuts,
then take Hacksaw or stanley knife till it looks like this.

There is an easier way:

Remove the engine cover. Undo the two screws securing the corrugated air inlet trunking to the top of the engine. Pull the inlet trunking forwards out from the round inlet spigot into the air filter box. Jam the free end back underneath the inlet tube/spigot. Replace the two screws and engine cover. Job done.

Air is now sucked in from the engine bay rather than outside. This isn't a problem - it 'might' be a little warmer and hence less dense than ambient when the car is idling but there are no losses from the trunking and no risk of drowning the engine when wading. When on the move (and in particular when the turbo is on song) there will be little difference in temperature (hence density) of the air entering the filter box and ambient. This has worked fine on YP53 for about 6 months (with TU3B and EGR bypass).

Only thing left is to remove the air filter, but I wouldn't recommend it! ;)

Unfortunately, doing it the above way lost me 3 bhp on my rolling road test.

The air is not 'trapezoid' in the above example as it has not entered the correct flow. In addition, you are hoping that the air will enter the little gap at the front of the engine cover and find its way to the intake aperature. This would not be as effective as with the trunking in place.

Thank you for the advice - that's a good little job I'll get on to at the weekend!

I've always been dubious about any BHP gain with the Air intake mod.
3 BHP loss! That's amusing.:o

Sounds like the "placebo" effect, when owners make their cars louder, they are convinced the performance is better

Personally I'd rather have "quiet" airflow as the diesels make enough noise as it is, compared to the Petrol variants. IMHO:pillow:

I don't think 'flow' into the airbox is a particular problem: The inlet loss should be no worse than that in the trunking. Remember there are other feeds into the engine bay, the biggest being the radiator although air entering via this route be will be warmed up a bit, which probably explains the 'lost' 3bhp you measured.

I can live with that - I didn't mean to suggest that my solution (which I think has been suggested elsewhere) is the 'best' solution in terms of ultimate bhp. It just happens to be quick and easy to do and give a good idea of the gains to be expected by going the whole hog.

cheers

I'd like to know how JDC managed to convert a perfectly serviceable V6 into a Diseasel with just the aid of a hacksaw blade and a craft knife. :D :pillow: :pillow: :pillow:

Oh I dont know. MG did a good enough job!

Hi John,

Do you have a Synergy unit on your CDT, if yes were is it in the picture. Also would doing the air intake mod improve performance without the Synergy unit.

Cheers, by the way a very clean looking engine you got there.

Yes the Synergy is fitted in the picture above.
The cables run under the Top cover, clear of all the Wiring etc, then neatly run underneath to go into right hand side of battery box, that is where the Synergy is hidden.
