Not much done on this project yet, but I used some time yesterday to get a better overview. Most brake and suspension parts looks good. The car has only don 1000miles since its last MOT 2 years ago, so there should not be any big surprizes there.
The undercarriage looks to be in a fabulous good state. Rear sills are firm. The car has a sticker in the rear window stating that the car has had an antirust treatment. I contacted the company on the sticker and got confirmed that the undercarriage and body cavities has sprayed with "Tectyl" July -03 and July -06!! That is a great bonus!! Cleaning up the plenum chamber and rodding its drain was performed and the battery put on charging at the end of the day. It always brings peace to mind when having that task done. More updates to come, hope I get the cylinder head out of the car during this weekend. That will probably reveal some of its history/state and be the base on how to proceed with the best possible HG solution. I want to go for the N-series gasket, but the state of the liners and cylinder head will decide this. |

Cylinder head never skimmed (119mm). Deep indents in cylinder head, so this one is probably cooked to scrap. Liners stands proud 0.025-0.05mm above block deck. Need to take some more measurements after cleanup. Not sure how to approach the repair at the moment. Have to check the condition of the two other cylinder heads I have stored somewhere first :D |
Who knew that K series engines doubled as chocolate fountains? You could hire that out for wedding parties.

I have done some closer inspection to this engine now. Not easy to get a accurate measurement of the liner stand proud, but they seems to be close to 0.001"(0.025mm) above the block deck. The cylinder head has deep fire-ring indentaions, so its considered as scrap. I have two other cylinder heads on the bench, both removed from running engines. Both have some minor indents from the fire rings, but I guess this is normal. no.1 had an MLS gasket fitted and is overskimmed down to 118mm. The other one had an elastomer gasket togehter with a 0,5mm head saver shim fitted. Its height is 118,4mm. None of the cylinder heads will take an N-series gasket I assume. I will favour a solution where a head saver shim is used as it will compensate for the overskimming done and is also forgiving to other cylinder head issues. I will not use a "wellseal" fitted shim, so then it all ends up with the MLS alternative. At the moment, I think a resonable solution is to raise the cylinder liners with liner shims so the stand proud is 0.004"-0.005" and fit everything together with a preium MLS gasket (Victor Reinz) and uprated oil rail. I am not sure if the higher tensile bolts is needed? Any comments/Advice is greatly welcome :) |
Have you considered the uprated Payen elastomer head gasket? much more forgiving with liner height.
