Absolutely, given how hard it was to get off I fully intend to grease it before re-assembly. I'm assuming silicon grease would be fine for the rubber grommets?

It should be ok you can use rubber grease, Vaseline also should be ok for those grommets as they are quite thick & large, grease the lugs too ;)

Success - solenoid rebuild started first time!
 
Thanks once again to this forum and the generous help from fellow Roverites I managed to get the starter motor out, rebuild the soleniod with a £10 kit from ebay, and reassemble this morning. A pig to get out (much easier to get back in) but it started first time and is now purring like a kitten.


A big thanks to Arctic, roverbarmy, vitesse, MGJohn et al.


And I've still got some Vaseline left! But the less said about that the better . . .
