Auto Boot Lift Mod

I have recently been working on an automatic boot lifting mod, that will fully open the boot with a press of your remote button, or the in car boot release button.
This mod has been fully tested on a mk2 facelift 75 saloon. It cannot be guaranteed to work on a zt with boot spoiler, purely for the fact that I haven't tried one as yet. If anybody wishes to purchase a set for their zt to try then this is fine:}
As of the moment, this mod doesn't work on a tourer tailgate due to the geometry of the tourer hinge assembly being different. I will however, be trying to develop this mod to suit the tourer at a later date.
I now have sought suppliers for all the materials required, and have managed to keep costs to a minimum.
I must stress that this is a 'Non Profit Venture'. I have NO financial gain from it.
It is purely something that I wanted for my car, and once perfected, wanted to offer it to other fellow members.

However, I wasn't 100% happy with it, so back to drawing board:D

The springs are being manufactured specially for this mod, locally to me.
They will be manufactured from a galvanised steel, so no rust issues later down the line.
The other parts used will be made by myself using stainless steel and nylon, so again, no rust issues:}
Due to the fact that I have to keep down a 12 hour a day job, and have family commitments, I will be offering these kits on a list basis. I expect to be able to produce 10 sets per week, with the first sets being ready to ship, week commencing Monday 28th May 2012.
The cost of the kits will be £30 per set inclusive.
I'll offer them in 2 ways.

1. As a kit, which will include 2 springs, 2 nylon bushes, 2 nylon washers, 2 stainless steel spacers, and 4 galvanised penny washers.I'll also either send out fitting instructions with these, or create a how to on the forum for you to refer to.

Option 2, no longer available
2. For the people that don't want the DIY version, I'll do a completely made up set of struts which will take you 5 minutes to swap over. This is on an exchange basis though, and it requires you to be able to swap the struts over within 7 days of receiving the new ones, and send me your old struts back, ready to be modded for another person.Note. This kit no longer comes with the heat shrink applied, as it was found to be hindering the operation of the spring. Most are opting to paint the springs black or colour coded to their car.

The cost as mentioned earlier is £30 inclusive for either option to UK destinations. Outside the UK will incur extra postage charges.The advantage of option 1 is that you won't have to pay an extra postage cost to send your old struts back to me.
I think that covers everything but if you have any further questions, feel free to ask, and I can amend the above to suit if required.

I will now start a list for you to add your interest on this thread. When your turn becomes available I'll pm you my PayPal details. Once payment is received, I'll send goods:D

Thanks Nick. I'm hoping most people will be opting for option 1 as this is an easy self assembly mod. However, if anybody opts for option 2 and I find that there are too many delays for the exchange option, then I'll have to remove that option, without causing too many problems, as people will still be able to get the kit.

Consider it done:}

The facelift models have this function as standard. A long press of the unlock button releases the boot.
It can be done on a mk1, but you will need to do another 30minute mod first.

Not my business but would a refundable deposit for the exchange units work?

Daft question, how soon are you likely to want payment for these?

For the first 10 on the list, I expect to be sending out payment requests next Friday, once the first batch has been made. Looking at the list so far, if you were to put your name down, then I would think I would be requiring your payment the following friday:} If you want to put your name down and when yours becomes available, you find you can't afford at that time, I'll just bump you down the list, and supply the next customer, but you'll be on the list;)

hi steve have you seen harrys thread about handbrake compensators and trying to get returns back,have you thought about a refundable deposit you will get them back then pretty quick .it would be a pity to see this great mod hit the buffers for the sake of non returned struts.

It's simple people. if you don't return them I am pretty certain you WILL be named and shamed. I would imagine all that will happen then is Steve will ask you to send your own first and you will have to wait a week or so for them to be returned. If people want to help Steve, stick to the rules he has set out....Please :)

It is a real shame that Harry has been forced into ending his service. It appears so far from my list that the majority of people want option 1, which is the DIY version.
If my exchange service finds itself in the same situation as Harry's at a later date, then this option will have to be removed.

Assembly is basically remove strut from car, undo both ends, slot on parts from my kit, screw ends back on, place inside heat shrink and heat with a heat gun or similar method. Let cool, and fit back on car:}

Just a thought, what will happen if our struts have weakened with age? Will the boot just open very quickly and it'll be obvious? It's just that I expect to find mine are deficient in some way, much in keeping with the rest of the car:o

It would be interesting to see how you get removing the steering lock past the insurer.

If your struts are that worn out that you have to hold the boot lid up, then they might not work in slowing the spring action down. If you can still feel some resistance when you lift the boot lid quickly then you should be ok.
You would soon know if your struts are totally shot as the boot will be pretty heavy;)

Option 2 is a 5 min changeover;)

Because of the nature of the contents and paper work in my boot I cant afford any one to get to my boot before I get out of the car, I drive wifey about her job as a debt collector, so we have data sensative paperwork in the boot

You could always do the remote mod first though, and then you could be stood right next to the boot when you open it;)
