Another one saved! My new daily - ZT-T 190 SE

Meet Big Mo! Another one saved from going to the scrappy!

Just purchased another MG, this time a lovely MKII ZT-T 190 SE in PBT which hopefully all going well is going to be my new daily, replacing my Typhoon ZT. This one had been sat for around 18 months about 5 mins from me and was pointed out to me by a local customer some time back. Went to have a look at it a couple weeks ago and found it was a MKII 190 SE no. 55 of only 89. Has almost every option fitted:

Full black leather heated electric memory seats
Cruise Control
Traction Control
Sunroof
Highline Satnav + shark fin aerial
Xenon headlights
powerfold mirrors
Rain Sensor Wipers
Autodimming Mirror
Highline IPK cluster
Headlamp Washers
Detachable Tow bar
Has the v8 splitter thing under the front bumper
Stainless back box (makes a lovely sound!)
Not sure if it has some sort of sports suspension as it seems to sit slightly lower than other tourers I've seen.

The only thing it's missing is the harman kardon sound system which is a shame as I was hoping it would have that but never mind. + it has 11 spoke wheels rather than Apex's, but a bonus is the 11 spokes have been freshly refurbished (powder coated).

Popped round today to see if I could get it started and moving, as I'm having it recovered hopefully later this week. Battery was completely dead so swapped that with a fully charged one and amazingly it fired up on first turn of the key for the first time in at least 18 months. It was a little lumpy at first (fuel being so old and also it was very low on fuel), so put in some fresh fuel started it up again and it ran perfectly smoothly. Not even any tapping noises from the engine. Well chuffed!

Took it out for a little spin around the block and I have to say it drives extremely well, can't tell if the vis motors are ok yet but felt like it had some good poke. Brakes feel okish, will need to clean up the discs properly to see if they'll start working properly as they're covered in rust.

There's a few issues with it, all which can be sorted
- the bonnet is damaged, the car was backed onto (quite literally) by a 4x4 previously damaging the bonnet. A replacement black bonnet is included. The owner tried fitting it some time back but apparently the front end is pushed back slightly as the new bonnet wouldn't fit properly. Will have to look into that. The slam panel looks straight, will have to get the bumper off to look into that further. Worse case it'll need a replacement slam panel.
- driver's side front wing is damaged and needs replacing
- there are dents in the doors (small carpark dents) which will need to be taken out
- rear bumper has some damage in a couple places so will need replacing
- been told the aircon condenser has a major leak, so aircon doesn't work. So condenser will need to be replaced.
- I've been told one of the exhaust down pipes is cracked, i believe it's the front one as when I started it up some fumes came up from the front of the engine. Some time back one of the engine mounts failed (I would assume it was the top one) and the engine dropped which caused the damage to the exhaust. The engine mount was replaced, but the damage to the exhaust wasn't noticed until later.
- The sunroof doesn't work, would either be the fuse or probably more likely the motor. Apparently the sunroof worked before the car was parked up so for some reason it's died whilst it's been sitting there.
- The passenger side powerfold mirror is struggling, it jams when opening out unless I help it to open.
- The switch panel for the driver's electric seat has a broken mount.
- the car generally is extremely dirty and in need of a thorough clean due to being parked up for so long, engine bay is a mess but interior is pretty clean. Boot is spotless.
- headlights need a refurb.. I wonder who can sort that out for me :D

The car comes with some decent history, here's some of the key things I have in the history:
- 17/03/2011 - new front to rear brake pipes fitted
- 07/10/2011 - new battery
- 31/07/2012 - LUK master, LUK slave and Sachs Clutch Kit fitted
- 20/04/2013 - replaced ignition coil
- 04/09/2013 - new engine mount
- 04/02/2014 - Clutch, master and slave replaced again!
- 01/07/2015 - Steering Rack O/S Tie Rod and Gater Replaced

Sadly no receipts for belt replacement so will have to get that done along with the water pump and thermostat just to be safe.

Also came with the price list and options catalogue from 2004.

This will go in the garage for now as I will need to finish and sell my last project car which is the mki royal blue 75 connoisseur SE v6 auto which I saved from a scrappy a couple years back but haven't had the chance to quite finish yet. Once I've finished that one and sold it I'll be getting this tourer sorted and on the road. Can't wait :) I have a lot of plans for this one.

Even though you have not starting working on the ZT-T yet, it still looks good in the photos.

Was it previously owned by a club member as I seen the owners club sticker in the rear window?

It is good you have saved another car and it will look stunning once you have finished the working on the ZT-T.

Cheers Clyde :) It doesn't look too bad, bodywork is quite rough so will need a good clean and detailing. Can't say if the paintwork is clean or covered in scratches until I've washed it, there are swirl marks which I can see so will need to get them out. I should have taken a photo of the engine bay, looks like something out of a horror movie covered in cob webs lol.

At some point it belong to someone on here, not the guy I've bought it from but maybe the previous owner or the one before that. 2 owners ago it belong to a guy called Matt based in Dagenham.

Pretty sweet! Don't tell my other half but I've spotted a late ZTT 160 that is Sorn'd locally but still has MOT seriously considering it...

Sneak it onto the driveway... she might not notice :D

What's the build date? Also, is it the semi-skimmed road tax or the full fat £535?

A lot of work by the looks of it but as a daily you can do it as you roll. So long as no disasters you should still be able to say the money is invested, not spent.

You can check the VIS motors via ODBCII. Hopefully no other error codes? Has the handbrake and fan resistor been done as that will also save some cost.

build date is 6th October 2004. Being a 55 plate it's £305 road theft rather than the £500 luckily.

Is that using one of those vis motor testers that plug into the obd port?

Low speed on the fan works, as i tested it to make sure the engine running temp was ok and to check the fan kicks in at the right time. The handbrake works but is a little high so I'll just adjust that for now, got away with just adjusting the handbrake at the rear on 3 of our cars so far :)

Yes mate replacing the Typhoon as a daily but still keeping the typhoon of course :)

Just the standard OBD analyser - if the VIS are playing up it will provide error codes. At least that was the case on mine. Rebuilt VIS from Stocktake made an amazing difference. 1st is almost redundant and it gets to the rev limiter in 2nd scarily quick.

Will look into that, cheers :) Won' get to take it for a proper run yet until it's been MOT'd so won't know how the engine feels until then :)

Well thats the new 190 se recovered home cleaned up and tucked away in the garage earlier this week. Work starts on it in a few weeks time. Mechanically appears to be sound, will need some body panels replaced. There's some surface rust in 2 places on the sills. But doesn't seem like anything major is required :)

rear smiley plate is on the list :) Got to get it through an MOT first and sort out the front end.

The exhaust does sound nice but only the back box has been changed, the central silencer is still there. Going to be changing the whole system for a cat back system at some point to get a better sound :)

Rick-sta 16th July 2018 10:54

Some more work done on the tourer yesterday. Decided to remove the front end to see what the damage is like behind the bumper from where the 4x4 had backed onto it previously, hence why the bonnet was out of shape and mangled at the front.

No significant damaged but the top of the slam panel is warped in places and the middle was pushed back. We noticed this after replacing the bonnet yesterday to find the catches were way too far forward due to the slam panel being too far back. Took a lot of fiddling and knocking the slam panel forward into shape but got it all fitted. It will need a replacement slam panel to make it perfect, as the bumper does sit slightly too far back at the top middle.

But still looking much better already :)

Also fitted the boot foam tool inserts, boot tray and pizza lid for the spare wheel well which looks much better too :)

A lot of nice car there, even if she's in need of some fettling. You know it will pay you back one day (like having kids).

That guard is just the standard one which comes with the load cover, not the proper metal one :)

Was very luck to pick up a set of the original tourer width roof bars which attach to the two long length ones :) And also the factory ZT-T plates.

A hell of a lot of car for the £300 I paid :D

Rick-sta 24th September 2018 19:53

Quick update on the tourer. Haven't had much time at all to work on it at the moment.

A few weeks back I made a passenger height adjustable seat parts from a driver's electric memory seat and a passenger electric seat. This will be fitted to the tourer when I get time :) See here for more details on the conversion: https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/s...d.php?t=287623

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1861/...97a43919_c.jpg

I'm also currently repairing the driver's seat as the seat foams were in a right state, the seat base foam had completely gone out of shape. Also fitting better leather seat covers on the driver's seat, as the current ones have some signs of wear.

A few weeks ago I was able to get hold of some genuine side skirts which arrived today :D very lucky to get hold of them as the genuine factory plastic ones are getting very hard to find now. I'll be spraying these in PBT and fitting them early next year once winter has passed :)

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1917/...28ded8fb_c.jpg

Have come across a bit of a serious problem though the other day, opened the tail gate and there was quite a loud bang which didn't sound good. Well this is what's happened, the ball joint for the strut has broken, looks like that has been rusting for some time  So will have to look into finding someone who can weld this.

Rick-sta 11th October 2018 14:03

Not done much work on it recently mate, now that the 75 is sold and will be going soon I will be getting the ZT-T ready for it's MOT :)

Have got a driver's side cup holder for it now though ;)

Haha Wow!! 😏😁😂. Did you get the strut weld sorted mate? 🤔

Rick-sta 11th October 2018 15:01

No not yet. That will have to be done later after its been mot'd so i can take it to a welder :)

phatfiesta75 11th October 2018 15:14

Of course as it's not needed for mot. Well I'm sure she'll fly through matey 👍 btw not heard from the other member yet regarding my rear blind and fbh but I'll give him till 6 as he maybe in work but if not then I'll take up your offer mate and I'll look forward to getting everything done by yourself and can get a good look at the new project too as it's good work you've achieved up till now 🙂

Hopefully she will, doesn't need much if any mechanical work for the MOT I think. Brake discs just need cleaning up that's about it from what i can tell. Will have a proper look in the next few weeks when i start prepping it for the MOT.

No worries mate :)

Cheers :) got a lot planned for this one over the next year. Most of the external mods I won't be doing until spring time, otherwise things like the side skirts will only get chipped over the winter months.

Done a couple bits on the tourer over the last couple weeks. Fitted some shiney chrome bits in the boot :)

I'll be committing more time towards getting this tourer finished and ready for MOT over the next few weeks, for the MOT I'll be changing the brake discs and pads all round for some nice M-tec drilled and grooved discs and black diamond brake pads, have this set up on my ZT for some time now and very happy with it.

Haven't had a proper look yet but don't think it'll require much else for an MOT.

Will need to service it as well :)

Update

Been doing a bit more work on the ZT-T recently. Had the new heated windscreen fitted earlier this week, just need to wire it up and that'll be good to go, replacing the old cracked windscreen. Done a service yesterday as well, changed the oil, oil filter, spark plugs etc.

Replaced the broken glove box, and also fitted a new bonnet sensor so the car no longer thinks the bonnet's always open.

Took it in for an MOT today, I knew it wouldn't pass due to the brake discs and the nearside wishbone arm ball joint which has a bit of play, but wanted to check to see if anything else major would pop up before I go and spend money on Mtec brake discs and black diamond brake pads which aren't cheap. I was a bit concerned by the rust in a couple places on the sills, which the MOT tester showed me and gave it a good whack to show it's still solid, which is good as I was hoping they'd get through the MOT as I can then take it up to Nottingham to get the sills repairs by these guys who are highly recommended across the 75 and ZT facebook groups: https://www.tjhobbs.com/contact.html

Good thing is it hasn't failed on anything else major than what I expected, so will need to replace the brake discs all round and will do the pads as well, the wishbone suspension arm is being replaced next friday. Handbrake efficiency is showing up as low on one side so will adjust that when I replace the rear discs.

Retest booked for next Friday and then it'll be on the road :)

Scaramanga 20th December 2018 12:45

Didnt know you could get a heated windscreen!

Is this the same design that Ford uses?

My wife's Galaxy has this feature - much better than constantly wiping with a cloth!

Just caught up with this thread, nice work!

Rick-sta 20th December 2018 12:51

The heated windscreens were made in special batch orders, I arranged the third batch order earlier this year :) I have a heated windscreen on my ZT, my dad's 75 and had a spare one which I've fitted to this tourer as the original windscreen had a very long crack on the passenger side which would have failed the MOT.

The design is the same as the ford ones, I've been told that the manufacturer used to make these is the same one who has the contract for Fords. It certainly does look identical to my fiance's heated windscreen on her Fiesta in the way the heater elements are set up :)

Scaramanga 20th December 2018 12:57

Cool!

I would love one of those :drool4:

Have you wired it to a switch next to the heated seats/cruise as this would make an obvious and excellent place for it?

Sorry ive gone off topic!

Rick-sta 20th December 2018 16:14

Haven't wired this one up yet, but yes that's how I've done it on the other two, used a spare heated seat switch which I've fitted in the centre console switch panel upside down so it doesn't get mistaken for one of the other heated seat switches :) Fitted a timer relay which triggers the two main 40amp relays which power the screen, timer is set at 3 minutes which then automatically switches the heated screen off.

Rick-sta 27th December 2018 20:42

Ready for retest tomorrow

Been busy fitting the new mtec drilled and grooved brake discs and black diamond brake pads all round over the last 2 days. Also adjusted the handbrake so it works nicely on the first 3 clicks.

Painted the calipers red as well to tidy them up :)

Are these screens single or dual circuit - the ZS/45 batch that I was part of have seperate circuits for drivers and passengers sides.

Update on the project tourer

Hi all,

Hope everyone had a lovely new year :)

Well it's been a week since i got the ZT-T on the road and have to say I am loving it so far. Done around 300 miles on almost 1 complete tank over the last week on my trip up to Milton Keynes and back, with the majority being motorway miles travelling up there and back from Essex, and the rest being a mixture of small roads and dual carriageway driving whilst I was up there and also whilst I was getting the car MOT'd. Used around 50ish litres so as a guestimate based on loose figures I worked out the MPG to be around 27mpg combined which I guess isn't too bad.

Been doing a bit of town driving since refueling and it seems like it's not as bad on fuel as I thought it might be, compared to the v6 auto I was running previously which was going though quite a bit of fuel on local driving. I've been used to running diesel 75's and ZT up to this point so was a bit worried the fuel consumption would be too much for me, but so far it seems ok :)

I have to say the v6 190 is good fun, especially with the stainless backbox on this one which makes quite a bit of noise. I will be changing the exhaust system though, as this one although it's not too loud most of the time, it can get a bit boomy at certain rev ranges, it's pretty loud at 2-3k revs, but then above that it goes a lot quieter and changes tone to a higher pitch noise. Also I noticed earlier in the week that a little bit of the sound proofing was falling out of one of the tail pipes, pulled that little bit out and it hasn't done it more since but the box will need replacing as it did get a bit louder after that happened. It looks like a cheap aftermarket back box, although the tail pipes are clean the box itself is pretty rusty so looks like it's one of those cheap stainless ones where only the tail pipes are stainless and the box itself is just polished metal.

I have a driver's side V8 heatshield which I've kept for some time so if I decide to keep this tourer (which I really want to keep as long as I get on with the higher fuel consumption) then I plan to have a new cat back stainless duplex system fitted with oval tail pipes. Will need to do a bit of research into what sound level option to go for, will probably go for midsport but need to make sure it won't be too loud as on the tourers a lot more exhaust sound enters the cabin due to the more open back on the tourers. I will probably fit a new flexi at the same time.

Performance wise, I'm not 100% sure if it is running perfectly at it's full power, it's quick but I feel like the 2.5v6 auto I had before and also the 2.5 v6 177 manual model I drove previously felt faster. The 75 v6 manual I drove before I'm sure it felt like it had more kick in 1st and 2nd gear. I've replaced the vis motors with refurbished ones which now both definitely work as I've tested them using toaf, as the original ones had both failed as they were both clicking when tested. I'll get this looked into by my mechanic when it goes in to have the belts done, he's had v6's before so he should be able to tell if it feels like it's not running perfectly. I guess it's probably because I'm so used to the torque in diesels especially remapped ones ;)

To drive the ZT-T feels really good, has a very tight feel with no roll and corners very flat, whilst at the same time providing a lovely soft ride so you don't feel the bumps in the road. A very positive driving experience. The gearbox and clutch feel very good with no slip from the clutch, good thing as the clutch had been changed in recent years which I have a receipt for.

The brakes are fantastic now I've replaced the discs and pads all round, for anyone who has standard brakes the 190 brakes upgrade is well worth it, it makes a huge difference. I've missed having this braking power as I'd been running a 75 with standard brakes and also driving the TF for the second half of 2018. I have the same brake set up on my ZT diesel as well which I upgraded the brakes from standard to bigger 190 brakes set up :) Handbrake holds amazingly as well on the first couple clicks, think this is the best handbrake I've ever had on one of these, it's silly but just feels so much better only having to pull the handbrake up a little to get it to hold well.

Needs a couple bits done on it, the sills in 2 places are showing a lot of rust, they're still solid but eventually will go though. Already knew about this but the MOT guy called me over to demonstrate that they were still solid which was reassuring, but advised to get them repaired within a year. So will be going up to Nottingham to get that done as mentioned in one of my previous posts.

Exhaust needs changing due to the backbox as mentioned above and also due to a small gas leak from one of the middle boxes which was noted on the MOT. Whole lot will be replaced for a stainless system.

I'll need to change the tyres all round for a decent set. The rear ones are low and need changing soon anyway, but the front ones are utterly useless. The front pair are almost new but the grip is pretty non existent, cheap rubbish budget tyres. Literally every single time I pull away no matter how gentle the front wheels always slip causing the traction control to kick in as the light appears on the IPK screen. Quite annoying especially when I need to pull away at a junction quickly. Turn the traction control off and I might as well not bother as I just sit there spinning the front wheels for ages, absolutely terrible. I've had the traction control kick in many times in up to 3rd gear when I put my foot down. I run Nexen NFera SU1's on my ZT and have been really happy with them so will got for a set of them on this ZT-T. Only issue is I'm not decided if I want to change the wheels yet, so currently have to hold off tyres until I decide on wheels.

Oh and I also replaced the damaged offside wing by one supplied by Tim JMGRs, many thanks again mate :) Here's before and after pics, much better now :)

Update

Well it's been a while since I posted an update on this thread. The car has come a long way since my last update, but its almost time to put it up for sale as well as i have my next project to work on which i bought a couple months ago.

Didn't realise how rare these 190 SE tourers are but this one is 1 of only 89 ZT-T 190 SE's made and 1 of only 18 ever made in PBT according to the build data.

Since my last update it's had the following:
- new stainless cat back exhaust which makes an awesome sound
- replaced both front doors only due to the old ones having some dents and scuffs.
- Replaced the slam panel as well with a freshly painted one in gloss black. - - Removed the cheap cone induction intake and refitted the original air box. - - Replaced the tailgate glass as the heater elements werent working on the old one.
- Fitted some custom quad xenon projector headlights with angel eyes and led indicators in the headlights, and led angel eye fog lights.
- Also fitted white footwell lights in the front and rear footwells and puddle lights under the door mirrors which turn on when the car is unlocked.
- Fitted some custom led kick trims which light up white and say MG ZT-T 190 SE on the front trims and MG ZT-T on the rear ones.
- Installed some custom black inverse dials as well.
- New tail gate struts have also been fitted as the old ones were a bit tired.
- Rubber splitter fitted to the front.
- Also just had the rear seals repaired/welded so the sills are solid now.
- Fitted a double din android head unit as well to replace the factory highline unit.
- Also fixed the cruise control and got that working now.
- New black MG badges front and rear
- New number plates front and rear with proper rear smiley plate fitted now.

Currently in the process of changing the remainder of the dash leds to blue, and next week its going in to have the belts, water pump, thermostat etc done and then going for a fresh MOT :) and then it'll be all finished and sadly going up for sale. I've absolutely loved owning it and would keep it if i could, but need a diesel as a daily which is what it's being replaced with. But hey at least its another one saved :}
