starbug2 16th January 2013 21:25

looks nice but 55 reg is not that uncommon as i've seen a lot more resent

generic_username 16th January 2013 21:50

I've seen a handful wearing '06' plates and quite sure I've seen a '07' on ebay as well.

I like that, ''ghost cars''

rich17865 16th January 2013 21:54

I have definitely seen a 07 on ebay, I think there was a small possibility of a 57 and 08 plate one flying about too

MattyC 16th January 2013 21:55

I'm pretty sure I saw one on an 08 plate a couple of years back? I think SMC cars are all on 08 plates as they were forced to register them before new EU emissions laws or something came into play?

55 isn't uncommon tbh, mine was just a month away from being a 55. A lot of the cars in the months after they went bust, would have been sold at a considerable discount, and ended up being registered on 55 or even 06 plates.

MrDoodles 16th January 2013 21:55

The pre-reg cars that SMC still have, are on 08 plates and the very last cars had to be registered on 58 plates, as they didn't comply with tightening emissions coming into force in 09! :}

SapperGB 16th January 2013 23:28

There's a 55 (November 2005) plate in this sites for sale forum ;) I shall be seeking more detailed build info over the next day or so.

That will be mine. From what I can gather, it was built in late 2004. Where it was until registration is anyone's guess!

James.uk 17th January 2013 01:06

The seller seems pretty desperate to avoid any legal obligations pertaining to the sale, prob is, no matter what waffle he writes, people still have their statutory purchase rights innit.. :)

A good buy at the moment though. :)

Nope I was referring to mine :p from what I remember she was built in April 05 and being so late in production I think she may have been hand finished' hence my intention to look deeper at the history.

Aye, We had a Black MG ZT on a 56 Plate at work, it was in a very sorry state though :( Some people just don't know how to look after things.

MrDoodles 19th January 2013 15:01

Duotone 19th January 2013 15:31

Here is an 08 plate 75 tourer.

Its a private plate but still an 08 car [note, you cannot buy a private plate to make a car look newer]

Mind, its been for a holiday to Bremuda and returned.

Late registered cars

My ZT V8 is an 06 and my Fathers ZT-T is a 56. I have also seen a black ZT V8 on an 08 plate. Is there any delivery mileage cars, pre-registered still about any where? Did the receiver sell everything?

I believe that SMC still have some delivery mileage cars that are on 08 plates! :)

I wouldn't buy a late car for two reasons:
  1. It may have been built under the Administrators from "spare parts" or
  2. On a V6/V8 you'll pay more Car Tax than a pre-2006 car

sworks 20th January 2013 21:06

Mines an 05 so not late registered but built in the last 48 hours of trading, also the last car to be handed over in person by John Towers :)

I think he was refering to the cars put together after the administraters were called in and finished by hand :) All the 55,06,56 etc cars were built earlier and registered at later dates when eventually sold with the exception of the few hand finished ones

Did The Men With the Axe Over Their Heads Still Have Pride in Their Work?

I think they did have pride and I don't think they ran out of good parts - just time. I've seen nothing on mine that indicates corner-cutting in putting it together. (I do sometimes wonder where they got the engine, though!:))

However, should you have inside information, I'd be interested to hear the tale.

If I've got it right (from the data obtained by Reebs), the team of 10 men hand-assembled 93 cars in about a month.

GagHalfrunt 20th January 2013 21:48

No, no inside info or anything. It's just that you'd have people using "whatever's left over" to build as many cars as possible, some expertise gone, working hard knowing the end is nigh. I should imagine horrible for anyone in that situation; I'm sure they did their best with pride! No offence intended! :}

Incidentally aside from my father-in-law being at MGR up to bankruptcy I actually come from a family of engineers, only one which is still in the trade. I remember my dad (formerly a toolmaker) training his Taiwanese replacements. :( Oh the joys of being brought up in an industrial area!

If anyone's feeling down this morning, have a look at some of the prices on their used Rover's and MG's, it'll cheer you up no end! :laughing2:
