Lower Plenum Drains solution!

Introducing the new Jules Plenum Drain Shield (copyright design)
In time for Autumn!

Lower Plenum drains design flaw sorted !!
Long time arriving I know (initial drawings made up back in 2005)

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_CloltyGrcac/TI...4/P1040614.JPG

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_CloltyGrcac/TI...0/P1040656.JPG

The design flaw
There is nothing inherently wrong with the 2 lower drains as such, providing it's only clean water that enters them!
It's when leaves, bits of small twigs and pine needles enter them that the trouble begins, and clogs up the almost closed off ends of the rubber tube.
These are in fact one way water valves which let water down but not up from the road.
Some rubber tubes have been cut off or removed altogether (not an ideal solution for obvious reasons as more engine/road noise enters the cabin)

MGR went to all the trouble of making the plenum covers with the square netted holes design (for filtering debris) but they left a 4 inch gaping hole where whole leaves etc can enter together with the Water from the windscreen, forming a muddy sludge.
We all know what happens then !

ie A flooded plenum chamber causes:
  • Sloshing water sound round corners.
  • Potential ECU damage
  • Gallons of water entering the Car (via pollen filter into footwells)
  • Long term musty smell & Carpet damage
  • Inner sill SRS sensors failure (caused by corrosion)

The gaping hole can be found on the driver's side (RHS for UK models) and LHS for Left hand drive models.
You will find the passenger side is blocked off with a vertical plastic moulding.
"Why didn't they block both sides off? " I hear you say....................because the wiper arm mechanism would fowl it.
This is where our specially designed shield works with it's right angle so avoiding the wiper mechanism.

Description
This is the new Jules Plenum Shield (copyrighted) which needs no tools or expertise to fit.
It is manufactured "in house in North Wales" from a high quality BLACK plastic.
Laser cut for a good fit and appearance.
It's concept is a "Fit & Forget" part that will extend the inspection intervals for the plenum chamber.
ie: Ideally only every 1-2 years or whenever you change the pollen filter.

The shield while still allowing gallons of Water to flow through into the lower drains, catches all the debris thus preventing the tubes from blockages.

Procedure

Remove the drivers side scuttle hatch (very carefully so as not to break the 2 clips)
Pull the sealing strip back about 12 inches (which allows the front edge of main scuttle cover to be raised slightly)
Ease the Jules Plenum Shield in, which slots over the bonnet release cable.
Fit as shown with the U shaped channel butted against the hinge bracket.
Refit the sealing strip & scuttle hatch.

Finally, there's another small hole that needs dealing with.
Clip the plastic netting piece (supplied) into place as shown, to the Washer pipe clip next to the bonnet hinge.
Now all your Plenum worries are over and a £500 ECU is protected!

Hi Jules, what would postage be on two of the covers ? Thanks John

Jules 6th September 2010 15:01

Hi John
No extra postage for 2 as they don't weigh much and fit in an A4 Jiffy Bag!
Have you got 2 Cars to fit them to?

Regards
Jules

BigJohn 6th September 2010 15:38

What is the reason for the plastic mesh - just behind the strut bottom mounting in the first photo?

These are even more vital on a 260 as the lower drain holes are only 5/15th inch (8mm) diam holes!

Think we realise that Harry but all the water & debris comes in from the drivers side on a UK Car and sloshes over to the passenger side, if the drain under the servo is blocked (which very few owners can get to!)
The plenum chamber (or double bulkhead ) is all one area.
Any ECU water damaged actually comes from the driver's side
I'll try and dig out a pic with the whole shuttle cover removed and all will be rervealed:cool:

Oh, I didn't realise that - thanks for the explanation.

I have managed to clean out two of the three (they didn't really need it), but I have not yet found the third one under the brake servo - so the photos would be very helpful.

Same purpose as the Main Shield Harry.........to allow water down but not the pesky leaf debris!

You will see it with a torch and telescopic mirror (right under the center line of the servo);)

James.uk 6th September 2010 18:41

Ellow Harry. :)

There are 3 plenums sort of.. two small ones situated by the bonnet hinges, and one long very deep one in between those two..

The shallow ones are very easy to get at, and the one on the passenger side has a lil wall between it and the main one that stops any debris getting in from that side..

The shallow one on the driver side does not have a wall due to the wiper arm drive shafts being in the way, so leaves and other rubbish can get into the main plenham from that side thus blocking the drains in the bottom and causing water to slowly fill it up untill it both reaches the ECU and overflows via the pollen filter into the passenger side footwell.. :(

Jules has designed a lil wall that goes in the drivers side to prevent any rubbish getting in from that side.. :D

The wire mesh bit is to block a smaller hole that also lets rubbish into the main plenum box..

If you weren't confused before, you should be by now! :D :D :D
...

Jules 6th September 2010 19:02

You are confusin people now James cos there are 2 lower drains (deep)
One underneath the centre line of the servo, the other is in front of the pollen filter.
Pics to follow unless someone beats me to it:o

Raistlin 6th September 2010 19:10

Perfick :D

My Paypal payment sent as well.

Cheers Jules

Thread stuck

I have stuck this thread as its a very good mod/solution and deserves a little sticky time, will unstick in a few weeks.

Jules 8th September 2010 18:47

Small Batch of these turned up today so they're on the way to you Gents
Many Thanks

Bartonrover 8th September 2010 18:58

Look good Jules - hope you have another batch in by the 20th! Pictures very clear - but where on earth did you find such filthy vehicles to model the mods for you?;)

Jules 8th September 2010 23:54

Ha
We deliberately left them dirty to see where the debris ends up:o

Another batch due on Friday.
Hell they only come from down the road in Denbigh anyway !
Our Bass player (come designer & prototype maker) produces them for me.

Raistlin 9th September 2010 11:34

Received and fitted, thanks Jules.

Well designed, well executed piece of kit :)

trebor 9th September 2010 17:23

mine arrived today too, not fitted yet but looks superbly made

3disco 9th September 2010 18:35

Thanks Jules,mine arrived today and decided to fit it straight away,just as well I did the drain was blocked once again despite regular checking and the water was probably a couple of inches deep ,soaking up the pollen filter, it looks a well designed bit of kit that should do what it says on the packet,once again many thanks,Ian.:}

James.uk 9th September 2010 19:20

Ellow Ian. :D I'm surprised you didn't just send Jules the hole and he could have filled it with biscuits and sent it back.. heh heh.. And pigs can fly innit.. :D :D :D

PS:- For family reasons, am staying in Wimborne in October so gonna have to give West Dorset a miss again for this year.. :(

Hi James,if I had known you were not coming I could have taken the scone out of the freezer and used that as a debris wall ,never mind its only money.:}

trebor 11th September 2010 12:45

just fitted mine pics below, i also used one of the " netting pieces " supplied
as instructed and held it by undoing one of the bolts passing through the netting and retightening.

The second picture is the passenger side of the car where you can see that there is already an OEM " shield " to stop the debris getting to the lower plenum on that side, Jules shield solve the problem on the other side which as he says was a design flaw

Great bit of kit, and easy to fit, go on order one !

Jules, you have a PM

Jules 15th September 2010 10:36

Well done Trebor!
I'm waiting for an even better material to deal with the gap around the bonnet hinge.

It will hold itself in place. No need to undo bolts etc
For anyone who's bought the first batch, I will gladly send this piece when they arrive.

Pics to follow

Hi Jules,
I want one of these, left hand drive, but tell me how much postage to Spain.

Looks great!

Jules 16th September 2010 18:30

Hi Eliseo

We are preparing some LHD shields as we speak!
Should be ready middle of next week.

A member in Slovenia is going to test one out to see if it fits.
In theory it will no problem, but we have to check first if you don't mind waiting. (No LHD ones here in Wales to test!)

PM me your address and I'll sned you one.
Postage is the same BTW.

Begiorlegi 17th September 2010 18:06

Thanks, Jules. Of course, I'm not in hurry.

By the way, don't worry, I've fitted the shield with Photoshop and it works fine... :D :D

Hello to everybody from Slovenia!

Last weekend I tested Jules plenum shiled on my LHD Rover 75. As you can see from photos I made, it fits well and Jules made a great job again.

Here are some photos:

http://www.shrani.si/f/W/GY/34K8FluB/lhd-shield-1m.jpg

http://www.shrani.si/f/3G/gh/3qTEY6WP/lhd-shield-2m.jpg

The shield is not broken or damaged, it is just a reflection.
Wiper arm passes shield without any problem.

Thanks to Jules. It was pleasure to participate in testing this LHD shield.

Igor

Begiorlegi 27th September 2010 17:32

Thanks, Sigor. Now we know there's no problem fitting the shield.

By the way, my 75 has a bung instead of a drain tube there. Do I need to fit the shield or not?

Begiorlegi 8th October 2010 14:09

Nobody knows?

Jules 9th October 2010 12:04

Hi Begiorlegi

Sorry I've been in Scotland gliding for a few days.
Yes even the later cars with the bung need the shield.
It will fit 99 - 2005 Cars.

NOCTURNAL 23rd October 2010 12:55

Just a quick Note to Publicly Thank Jules for the prompt arrival of the new Jules Plenum Drain Shield.
This might be a good time to point out that the new Plenum Drain shield is bent to 105° and not the original 90° as this was found to foul the wiper mechanism.

Jules furnished me with this information after I admitted snapping mine within 30 seconds of opening it :( as ‘I Thought’ it should have been “bent a little further “

Jules suggested I might like to share the information with you all for info so that no-one else was as stupid as me :getmecoat:

My embarrassment was whole and complete as I had carried out the box opening in the kitchen in front of the better half .....

I proceeded to say how neat it was adding “I think it has opened out a little”....

I then proceeded to flex it a little and promptly snapped it, to which I was treated to that withering look that only better halves can give, along with the comment of “That was Clever!!”

anyway, It's a nice piece of kit, and learn from the dunce....dont try and flex it ;)

Nick

How many guards should I order to cover the three?

Thanks

Hi Phil
Three sets will do it!

Just to clear up any confusion.

RHD cars kits contain:

Qty 1 shield and 1 x black sponge filter

Hi Lyndon, and many thanks matey. My appologies for being on the absent list so long, I've been so busy having two photography/literary books of mine produced and published that aeverything else took a back seat. Roxy is still my pride and joy and I have a lot of catching up to do on here :}

Sorry also for this mini hijack, guys.

plenum cover zt 260

will these fit a 260?
steve

Jules 18th November 2010 20:50

Hi Steve
Thanks for pointing this out !!
Yes they fit any 75 or ZT including the V8

Quite important to fit to a V8 as the lower drains are only a 10mm hole!
More to protect your carpets etc than the ECU of course.

Axolotl 19th November 2010 13:15

Have just Paypal'd money for a RHD version. Looks like a brilliant idea.

I notice you say "sponge" now instead of "netting" to cover the extra bit of space. Is fitting the sponge obvious?

Hi I'd like a RHD one but you don't seem to have one on ebay. I don't have a paypal account so I need the wife to get one from ebay for me, I'm not very good at this internet stuff sorry.

I notice you say "sponge" now instead of "netting" to cover the extra bit of space. Is fitting the sponge obvious?

Yes simply fill the hinge gap with it!
Some more updated pics to follow when time allows;)

Sorry Dave they might appear on eBay one day (when time permits!)
In case you didn't realise, you can still buy things with Palpal (with full protection) without going via eBay!
If your wife has Paypal, simply ask her to log into www.paypal.com and Click "Send Money"

When asked enter my payment email: [email protected]
Enter in the message box what payment is for etc, and it will be in post to you in no time.

Regards
Jules

Sorry I didn't know you could do that, I've just sent the money 12.95 inc post I hope that's ok, I look forward to fitting and having one less thing to worry about.

Axolotl 26th November 2010 10:41

Baffle arrived yesterday, fitted today (10 minutes, easy once I'd got it oriented the right way). I'll get some silicon beading stuff to finish the job at the weekend.

I took the opportunity to clear out the passenger side plenum and rod the drains. There was a lot of gunk in there. (As Lates will testify every time he services the car:o)

Hopefully, they'll stay clear now.

Thanks.

Hey bud

A little late to the party here but I'd like one.
As Autumn approaches I'd like to pre-empt the leafy menace....

Let me know if I can go ahead and pay.

After a RHD cover.

Lower plenum drains solution

Hello, are these plenum covers still available, they look perfect for me, especially because my neighbours have a great high conifer hedge. The blasted thing goes right down the side of my driveway, excellent looking solution.
