Tax disc

I have to renew my tax disc. My W reg Rover 75 is billed at £121 for 6 months. I understand that later model Rover 75s and ZTs are billed at a lower rate. I have replaced the original engine with a newer one from a crashed car that would have had a lower tax disc rate. The engine ECU remains unchanged.

The cars is still fitted with both EGR and CAT and runs perfectly. The ECU program is for 115bhp the engine came from a 135bhp car. Can I have the ECU reprogrammed to newer technical spec and get a car tax reduction?

Sadly it dont work like that :)
The car would need to be registered after March 2001

The tax rate is the rate when the car was registered. You can take a car with a very low tax band, tune it up, supercharge it, create more exhaust pollutants than say a 4 x 4 gas guzzler and you will still pay the same tax rate as a bog standard non-modified car. You car's output will be governed by the map in your ECU, so you new 'engine' will be chucking out 116bhp. Get it xpowered and have the extra gee-gee's.

Taxing

It's not right. My car doesn't do pollution, it hardly even smokes the exhaust in 115bhp tune.

its all a rip off thats why when the tax runs out i buy another one with tax on it. i have a 03 plate 75 which has a cat on it runs well within the limits then i have a old transit truck no cat chucks out loads of smoke more with a 75 on the back and the tax is cheaper on that than the 75

Pollutants are invisble just like the air you breathe.

Tax

Is based on CO2 levels
Tax for a manual 75 diesel is less than an auto
The new tax bands were from 2003 onwards (retrospectively introduced about 2005)
I have a 2003 auto and last time I taxed it was about £240/year
I bought my car on the basis of the load space (takes a 3' x 6' collapsible table) and the fuel economy. There was no talk at that time of tax according to CO2 levels.
I don't mind the govt. saying 'if you buy a car tomorrow pumping out 300g/Km you will pay £500/yr in tax', that's your choice, but to retrospectively apply the new higher rate was immoral.
I am on pension, retired and do limited mileage. I cannot afford to sell and purchase a more economical, low CO2 car, some of which are tax free (& do up to 70 something mpg, including the new BMW 3 series, eco model.)

Yes, it is the 1st March 2001.
My car was built at Cowley on the 30th June 2000, but was registered on the 1st March 2001, the day they changed it.
I have to pay the higher amount :D
