Air con compressor

Right me old muckas, anyone had a failing, or failed air con compressor, and what are/were the symptoms please?
Back story, during the summer, I was travelling home during a hot day, so put on the aircon. Just blowing air, not cold. OK I thought, IO'll get it regassed sometime, no big deal, but I also noticed a whining noise which raised and lowered with revs. Never gave it much thought and carried on. A few weeks later, I was at Halfords, so booked it into the auto centre for a regas. They did it, & reported all good, no leaks etc. Tried it and it was fine, but the noise was still there. After a couple of weeks, no aircon again and the noise was getting a little louder, coming from the belt side of the engine (1.8) The steering pump, water pump were replaced a couple of years ago when the belts were changed, so that leaves the compressor as the only belt driven component that's original, ie 20 years old, so I'm thinking it's that.
Any advice, suggestions greatly appreciated before I splash out on a new compressor:o

Normally the bearings in the clutch that go wrong Ronnie, these can be changed without changing the full compressor.
