Clutch needs replacing again after 4k miles-please help
 

Hi there,
I'm feeling rather depressed today after spending around £600 to get my clutch replaced at a so-called mgr specialist aka Horners at Swinton.

It appears to need doing again properly after only 18months and 4000 miles later.


Does anyone actually know a qualified and competent mechanic capable of doing this job correctly with quality parts in the north-west?
or am I dreaming that such a thing exists?

What was done originally, and what is the root cause of the current failure ?

3part clutch fitted, master not replaced, I think if I remember correctly it was a luk but not sure now as its not on the receipt. For the past couple of months I've wondered if the clutch was slipping but then thought maybe I'm being paranoid. Today I went to change gear and got a bit of a crunch and the pedal didn't feel right, hardly any resistance but I got home OK. Looked underneath and could see what looked like clutch fluid dripping from Bell housing. Would be good to take it somewhere local so no need to drive it too far, last time I paid for it to be delivered on a truck to the "specialist". Incidentally I found a couple of 'spare' screws under the bonnet after it was done last time. :(

Must be a slave failure if it's dripping from the bell housing. Should be under warranty??? :shrug:

From what I can gather not all garages like to add a warranty unless both the clutch and master cylinder are changed at the same time.

Annoyingly I've suffered the same on my project car. Very frustrating given the amount of work involved. In my opinion there are a lot of poor quality pattern parts scattered around. The trouble is even the so called named brands seem to be affected in my opinion. :getmecoat:

This happened to me also, 13 months and 3000 miles after a full new clutch including DMF with LUC master and slave the master failed. The job was done by Trikey so I know it was done properly. The master was replaced by Andy Willie and 10/11 months later the slave failed. He told me it was common and he had had them fail out of the box. He said in his experience all of the suppliers were the same and none was any better than the other including the metal ones.

It seems to be pot lock on the quality of the parts fitted, even trusted branded ones for these cars now. Big Russ advised me that this problem with replacement clutches failing with mainly hydraulic components giving out is very common. He has seen it on a lot of his customers cars and says now he would not buy a manual 75/ZT and to stick with autos if you want one.

So I'm wondering just what is the answer? Seems no manufacturer is up to the job. Who has changed their clutch and it still functions after doing a decent mileage and most importantly who made it? And any engineers, please can you re-engineer the slave? Thanks

i have change it twice, all clutch, master cilinder etc made by a trust garage,,,first with 135.000klm, second at 214.000klm......
