when something is not right

I have a bench grinder. The left wheel is held on by a left hand threaded nut, the right wheel by a normally threaded nut.

When you tighten one nut, you loosen the other. There is no spindle lock for tightening the nuts.

I must be missing something but goodness knows what.

I am normally quite good understanding nuts and bolts but this has left me stumped.

Perhaps when spinning this is good but for tightening it does not work.

You might find a pair of flats on the shaft, if not then the norm. is to make sure that the grinder is electrically isolated (if possible) and if not that it won't / can't be accidentally switched on.

Then grasp the relevant wheel and nip up the nut. It does not need to be excessively tightened.

It might tighten itself up a little, in use.

The safety aspect is "designed" in, by using handed threads.

Hi Mike,
no flats, surprised by that. The grinder is via a 3 pin plug so can be made safe. Totally understand the safety issue when spinning but I would have expected to find a spindle lock or as you say, flats.
