Speaking of A&E I took my missus to Bolton A&E at 10:30am this morning as she's still in pain from the fall last week, They said there's at least a six-hour wait so she said there's no point in you staying here all that time go & do the shopping & I'll give you a ring to pick me up when they're done, I packed an overnight bag for her too just in case.


She's still in there waiting to be x-ray'd.

That's one reason I'm not keen on going up. I had to go one morning after dropping a bunker lid on my finger, you'd imagine it would be quiet on a Monday morning, I was there for seven hours!

To be honest I'd love to get a once over and especially get some decent painkillers but I'm not mobile enough to get myself there and they won't provide transport because its non emergency. Only one neighbour drives (only 4 cottages), they're at work all day and at their daughter's most evenings, ain't paying 25-30 quid each way for a taxi, hospital bus terminus to A&E is a longer walk than I can manage.

I'm ok for an hour max after I get up in the morning then the pain kicks in but . . . . at random times during the day the pain disappears then, dunno why, bang, back it comes. No pain sitting or lying down, walking is either fine or agony depended on whether the pain has kicked in again or not. I hate being stuck in the house, I go out just about every day even if its just along to the shops, haven't been out for two weeks :banghead:

Just got back in, Eight bloomin' hours it's taken & when I went to pick her up the place was still choc-a-bloc. :mad: It's no wonder people aren't keen on going to A&E unless absolute neccessary.

The X-ray showed she had fractured her hip but they said it'll heal on it's own & wont need surgery, :shrug:
She saw the social services people & they gave her two new Zimmer frames, one for upstairs & one for downstairs plus a new commode chair.

She got lots more painkillers to cope with the pain too.


It'll be ping meals for tea, Meatball lasagne & a garlic baguette. :drool4:

Ian, that’s shocking news about your wife.

In comparison, last year when Jessica fell in the car park at home in Bristol. She was fast tracked in A&E.

Yes, a broken hip - the neck of the femur was completely fractured. She was admitted and 3 days later she had a total hip replacement.

Jessica was given the option of a partial hip replacement or “do nothing and let it heal without surgery, but there is risk of living life in a Zimmer or wheelchair”.

She said she was young, active and still had mountains to climb, so the doctors agreed they would do the Total Hip Replacement.

She had to wait for the op as there were people needing urgent surgery who were older and sicker than she was, the older and sicker had priority, no problem with that but by the time there was a slot for Jessica’s op, she had become very ill.

8 days later she was discharged home. I had to give her anti blood clot injections for 28 days and fortunately there were no post op complications.

9 months on since her hip replacement, Jessica no longer takes analgesics and she doesn’t walk with a limp, there is no need for crutches.

Your wife will need an urgent assessment for home care, usually provided by the community physio to set it up and she will most likely need the electric raised hospital bed.

I doubt she will be able to manage stairs, she will need a raised chair to sit on, a raised toilet seat commode and other mobility aids. These are provided by the NHS

Last year our lounge was converted into a hospital bedroom, as we went through all of the above at home.

A broken hip is very painful and my heart goes out to your wife and to yourself. We are sorry you are going through this. If it gets worse or if you or your GP suspect complications, go back to the hospital for a second opinion for another look.

Fingers crossed that her hip fracture heals fast and any further appointments are dealt with in a much more timely manner .

Morning all, Blue skies & sunshine this morning after low overnight temps, A low 1.6C recorded on the digital thermostat in the greenhouse, no wonder the seedlings aren't growing. :mad:










Thanks Jeff, Phil, She's still in pain & getting her upstairs to bed last night was hard work & painful for her.

The X-Ray showed the fracture was in the pelvis directly below the left hip joint. I'm off to get her prescription for painkillers at the local pharmacy as the hospital pharmacy was showing a wait time of 50 minutes yesterday so we left, After eight hours we'd had enough.


I'm going to get in touch with social services and see what they can do.

Morning, just! Decidedly cool here.I sympathise with your wife Ian, I'm glad we're in a bungalow because I'd struggle big time with stairs. For some reason I didn't get my usual hour of relatively reduced pain this morning, hit big time as soon as I started moving around, if anything worse than it has been :(

Ros and I are off to Suffolk (Near Woodbridge) to visit our friend in the care home.
