Wheel bearing thrust washer.

I had to replace a rear wheel bearing today, as it was starting to make dreaded noises.
All came apart as expected in a few minutes, except for the piece of metal that dropped out on removal. turned out to be the tab of the thrust washer.
Anyone else had this, should it be replaced? what is the purpose of the tab once it is all torqued back up?

As you may have guessed from the lack of replies Craig you have stumped the forum! :}

There isn't a tab washer as in a foldable type to secure the rear wheel bearing. This is what you should have, a washer with an inner locating tab item 3 here:

Can you post a photo of the broken part?

A very good question! The tab is used to locate the washer on the shaft.

I would say it is ok to use with the broken tab as once torqued your and the outer nut stakes it won’t go anywhere.

Strangely I’ve never seen one with any damage to the tab.

All I can think of is that the rim of the inner race of the bearing is quite narrow and it is hardened steel, so if the washer was to turn against it then the washer could pick up and get damaged as the tightening torque is quite high. Also being a small contact area there is less friction between bearing and washer, so it would be more likely to loosen at this point. The shoulder of the nut is far wider where it contacts with the washer.

Hi Lads.
A couple of photos of above mentioned part so members know what is being talked about without going to the Rimmer drawing ;)

In the absence of anything obvious that seems like a plausible explanation. I wonder how much torque would be needed to shear the lug off sideways? Much more than is specified torque for the nut I reckon. And it (the washer) has to be turned by friction or surface-surface interference. The torque would surely be collosal. Maybe the washer was flawed somehow during its manufacture.

I would certainly replace it. The tab prevents the washer from turning as the nut is torqued up (or should do). This ensures the inner race is compressed axially, with no radial movement that could spall the contact faces.

Thank you for the replies and Artic for his wonderful photos as usual.

It is indeed that tab that has broken and I have never seen a broken one either.
There is no obvious wear or burning of any sort and as I replaced the last one 8 years ago, the torque would have been correct.

I can feel the bearing is damaged (high spot) and am sure that the bits from the broken tab have over time damaged the bearing, it would not take much after-all.

Strange that not all wheel bearing thrust washer have the tab, I do wonder why as well really.

New one available from Rimmers at £2.40 and £6 for quicker delivery... :duh:

Thanks for the replies guys.

The tab is there to stop any turning motion being transferred to the nut and thus undoing it.-------(I reckon. )--;)

That makes sense. :}

I refitted the new bearing with the partly damaged thrust washer - a new washer on order.

All quiet now and no concerning ticking noises at any speed. So all good for now.

The thrust washer bears on the inner race only, so that's not likely unless the bearing were to seize solid. I reckon the name gives it away.;)
