Tyres for Serpent alloys
 

Hi all,
Putting Serpent alloys on a 75 tourer, is 225/50/17 the right size tyre to go for?
Any recommendations for tyres...don't want to open a can of worms on this :bowdown::getmecoat:
I don't throw this car around but like to go around a roundabout in the wet!! :}

45 profile is the correct size rather than 50 but nothing to worry about as your speedo will be only slightly inaccurate. Will be slightly more comfortable too with a bit of extra rubber cushioning the bumps.
Personal choice is top brand tyres. Budget tyres may be fine for pootling about but from experience when you really need to stop quickly, they are useless. Top tyres will grip better in turns and stop quicker too. Look at the tyre labelling. If the wet grip symbol has A, B or at very least a C then it’s going to be better for you.

Rover changed the profile to 50 for Mk2's on 17" wheels probably to smooth out the bumps but there is premium cost over 45's.

I fitted Goodyear Efficientgrip to my Meteors being labelled as better than most for fuel efficiency, wet grip and noise levels. I am happy with the road holding wet & dry but just a little disappointed with road noise, they tend to boom on anything but really smooth surfaces.

I can only go on my own experiences, but I've found the following selection to be pretty good value for money. I like a combination of a reasonably quiet tyre with decent feel and without being too stiff.

Running 225/50 r 17 results in a more accurate speed reading in my car (over 225/45).

I think that officialy the width was rediced for 50 profile tyres on 17" rims.

225/55 are going to be awfully close to suspension and bodywork - I don't know anyone else who has, 225/50 fills the arches very well.

225/50 r 17 here - yes even more expensive than 45 profile (which is bad enough).


P.S if the OP is looking at 55 profile tyres due to the lower price then reduce the width down to make them the same rolling diameter, At a guess 205/55 R17 may be OK if not too narrow on the rim?

A friend of mine runs a couple of HQ franchises & he recommended a budget tyre called Landsail which had pretty good ratings the first set I tried were 225/45/18 which preformed great although I did think they wore down rather quickly...Last week I had a set of 225/40/17 of Landsail fitted & I'm quite pleased with them grip in wet & dry is good but the ride is now slightly harder but I can live with that...Have got a motorway journey coming up so I will see how they perform at higher speed
