KV6 Mongrel swap
 

Hello all,

I'm in need of quite a bit of advice. I have a 75 Club automatic with a seized KV6 engine. I sourced another KV6 from a breaker in Wales. It was said to be from a nice running manual ZT. I bought it but there are several differences - Inlet manifolds are different, front end engine mounting plate is different and spark plug suppressor caps are different. I know I have a KV6 here but am not sure which one. What have I bought.

I am at the stage where the motor is separated from the bell housing. I have a gap of about 8 - 10mm between the two components but cannot separate them.

It's been a very long time since I performed an engine swap and I have never done an automatic one.

My questions then are:

Have I missed something in separating the engine and box?

Can I separate engine from box in position or do I need to remove engine and box together?

If engine can come away from the box in place, do I need to remove the front mounting plate?

You need to remove the engine and gearbox together.

Have you removed the hidden bolt (seen when the starter motor is off)

Also the tin plates on the bellhousing can snag and cause difficulty.

Sounds like you are changing an early to late (or vise versa) engine, all can be swapped over, but it’s a little more work as the coil packs and oil cooler are different.

You can remove the engine on it's own if you wish, There is a small cover plate on the engine that you remove to gain access to the 4 bolts that hold the torque converter to the auto flywheel, once these are removed the engine comes out without the gearbox ;)

Is there room Dave? I have never managed to remove the engine and leave the autobox in place!

That is how we did mine in the drive many years ago Andy, no problem at all, no need to even mark the bolts on the flywheel/ torque converter as they only align up one way.

Dave, don't ask me why but suppose I was a bit bored so googled photobucket fix

Installed it into Chrome and your picture is 100% clear, but when I try and save the picture it reverts to the blurry photobucket.

Give it a try, I'm now going to try some of Arctic's blurred photos - nope doesn't work for TinyPic as no image.

Brilliant, clear as day on the forum post with the chrome extn :bowdown: as you say if you save it then it saves the blurred version

And why can you never get the bloomin thing in line first time!!
