Serpent wheels tire sizes?
 

Hi, I have a question regarding my 17-inch Serpent aluminium rims. I need to replace the front tyres on these. The current sizes are 225 x R17 x 45. I want to replace only the front tyres. I want to make it less sporty and more comfortable. I also want to reduce the fuel consumption a little.The rear tyres are still very good, so I will not replace them now until next year. Can I take the next size of tyres, only front, rear stays the same as now,
215xR17x65 ?

What is the minimum width and maximum width tyres for these rims and what is the maximum height of the tyre for this rim?

What about driving with a different size at the front than rear?

The handbook for Mk2 models with 17" rims quotes a tyre size of 215/50/17 which presumably was for ride improvement reasons. I've thought of trying them to improve ride. Its 10mm less on width with a 6mm deeper wall so not sure how much difference this would make to the ride and given in the UK this size has about 20 - 25% price premium I wonder whether its worth it.

On another recent thread someone had moved from 215/50 to 225/45 with negligible difference in ride quality.

I am not sure whether the tyre size you suggest trying would fit without problems but it would cause the speedo to under record. At a speedo reading of 100kph actual speed would be 112kph which I would guess is too wide a differential to be legal, and as the previous post there are insurance implications to consider.

Revisited my MK2 Handbook and according to the above data 225/45 R17 was not a factory fit option for the MK2 . 215 /50 R17 tyres been the sized quoted and the confirmed size on my Starspokes
I have seen 225/45/R17 fitted on 17 inch wheels as well , whether 225 /45 R17 was used on the MK1 with that rim size , or has that tyre size has been an MG ZT size and people have fitted to them to a Rover 75 I don't know :shrug:
Some body with a MK 1 handbook could possible confirm tyre sizes used on earlier cars
As said by others you would have to size the wall profile to match the circumference of the already fitted tyres so the 45 profile would become 50 and not 65 as that would be to a great a circumference difference

Car insurance could be another issue particularly if you mix different tyre profiles front to back rather than fitting 4 matching profiles

Just checked my mk1 handbook which states 225/45 ZR 17 90W tyres for the 7.0j x 17 wheels.

Obviously resized for MK2 cars , so either size is right depending on the age of your car .

The tyres need to pair up on each axle only, and if you change to the MK 2 tyre size, that would be legal, and of no interest to an insurance company, as they were a factory fit size for that model car. As said the difference will be negligible, plus wider lower tyres do their job better and look good :D

A few years ago I had 225 50 17 tyres fitted to my V6 contemporary 75.
Better ride quality and handled fine.
45 profile were noticeably harder ride.
