Please forgive the preamble to this, the background is relevant.

I owned and operated a legitimate stained glass business in prestigious High Street premises for 15+ years with a distinctive and related name. I retired and closed the business in good standing some 8 years ago.

It later came to my notice that an American one-time purchaser of my work was using my then on-line ID in support of his own new business. He also copied some of my designs.

That business has now failed in America and I have just obtained a very similar domain name to my original one through Ionis. Since I retired I have had quite a few enquiries about new work and now am tempted to consider accepting selected commissions.

So, I need a new website without flash bang wallop graphics and with a basic front. Does anybody have info on how to set about getting a website and, more importantly, what not to do? At my age it’s surprisingly flattering and looks like being er, good.

I would approach web design studio (one that has premises) and tell them what you need and what you don’t.

They will host everything on their server for a fee, and do all the hard work.

We have a small business near us that does that kind of thing so I think that’s what I’ll do. With my techie skills I’ll probably end up on a dating site and get whisked away to some republic by a nubile angel.


It’s not always what is usually expected and the pics below are one or two examples of themes that were requested and completed. People came in with vague ideas more in hope than expectation and the look on their faces when they saw the result was a wonderful thing.


Pic 1. Customer wanted her particular theme of Art Deco based on a well known picture that had a single greyhound only – but she had two of them. So the pup was added and the window placed in her hallway. Leaded light (with integral steel rebar) of 3 sq. ft.

Pic 2. Nicknamed Fiona, another Art Deco theme. 1920’s girl-about-town overlaid on a full sized mirror and done Tiffany-style. Wall mounted in the customer's dressing room. The reflection shows the other side of the studio. Copper foil and soldered on top of Mirror plate with support under. 5ft x 3ft.

Pic 3. A customer who happened to be a property developer kept the Penthouse for himself and family on the top of flats he had built. The lady of the house was into butterflies and went into raptures when she saw the butterfly (a glass one!) that I had fused into the clear glass. The place was S/SE facing and the colours travelled across the room most of the day.

Pic 4. Customer was into Art Deco and winged wildlife. He nearly cried when he came to view the finished job when installed in the double doors inside the lobby/hallway. 3 years later he moved house and took the double hallway doors with him. Leaded light. 10 sq.ft.

Pic 5. A customer with season tickets to every bikefest here and abroad. 5ft. X 4ft. That’s not the customer but is the window. Oh, and he knocked the hole in the wall between the dining room and the sitting room. He lived on his own. Notice the pipes? Any guesses? Begins with an M and a V....

Pics 6/7. Quick shots of some of the lighting stock in the front of the shop we were in. Imported, of course. Usually over 100 of them.

Not a car amongst it all, but it enabled me to indulge my desires in that direction.

Amazing work, no wonder you're tempted to continue on. I dare say there are not too many places able to produce work like that nowadays :bowdown:..

I wish I had that sort of creative talent.......I failed with a roll of decra led to produce convincing Elizabethan Diamond lead patterns......
