Cheap cam belt change for v6

My 99 2.5 v6 is at 59000 miles on what I believe to be it’s original cam
Belts as there is no history of them being changed.

I’ve been quoted by a local mg rover specialist £650 for the cambelts and water pump to be changed. This is a little out of my budget! Can anyone recommend a garage who will do a job but at a more reasonable price? I am located in Sussex but could travel within 100 miles or so

Give PhilT4 a try

MGR Mobile Mechanics do it for £450 iirc.

£650 isn’t too far off the mark, and £450 is the absolute best you can hope for - it’s not a cheap or easy job :)

That is a cracking price considering whats involved, the parts alone are half of that and they come and do it on your drive.

Are these not the same out fit that recently looked at Dawn's car ? which Dave sorted out in the end.

Personally I would keep it in house, and ask the boys on here whom are willing to do the belts for you.

Maybe start with Phil T4 is he not the closet ?

Hi All,
I'm based Burntwood near Cannock and have a ZTT v6 180.
The belts have only done 45,000 miles but have been on scince 2010.
Can someone advise on the difference between the belts but also what else to consider changing at the same time as the belts and waterpump while it is stripped down. And any recommenations on who to contact.

Thanks
Will

Start saving now Jack whilst you cover another 30,000 miles. As you can see, your belts have lasted for 19 years without breaking, just like mine. My belts covered the specified 90,000 miles and all three were in perfect condition when removed. I bet yours will be too. You can read my recent threads if you like but a small number of people got quite upset at my findings.
Please read on about the importance of checking the tensioner pulley.

Hi Will. The difference between the belts is that the front one is a lot longer than the two rear ones! The most important item to test is the tensioner pulley for bearing wear. Mine had covered 90,000 miles (as specified by MG Rover) and was definitely in need of renewal.

As you have seen, your belts have not broken after 6 years as some people convince themselves will happen. In fact, the belts will be good for 90,000 miles regardless of the time taken to reach that mileage (as I have just proved on my own car). But you must make your own decision after considering both arguments.

I would not use the mobile people again - I have my reasons, but don't want to cause trouble on here. One thing you do have to remember with them, the £450 DOES NOT include travel costs, which if you're not local to them would be on top.
