Webasto smoking.

Hello, I have a 02 cdi with Webasto heater, last year the heater started smoking badly, I think it has a diesel leak. I removed fuse 8 and it stopped, today I had to use my battery booster, when the car started it started smoking badly again even with the fuse out, I will be using the car tomorrow and don't want it smoking again. Any advice p,ease?. Thanks, John.

Contact Trebor or Devilish on this site they are the experts.

The Webasto's smoke when carboned up inside which is exactly what happened with the one on the car that I bought, absolute massive clouds of smoke.

It could be that possibly?

They swapped over a recon burner unit on mine in no time, and job done.

I think there may be a How To on how to service a webasto, not that difficult

What Bendrick said .

It might be quicker/simpler and much cleaner (;)) to have them simply replace the whole unit .

If, however you want to pull it apart I think the thread is this one:

Good Luck.

I am a bit cautious answering anything that is posted on 1 April but I will give you the benefit of the doubt !

Bad smoking of the FBH is usually caused by unburnt fuel in the combustion chamber which gets clogged up with carbon over time and prevents the combustion process operating as it should

This is a combustion chamber that came out of one of the FBH's myself and Steve serviced and is one of the worst I have seen

This is what it should look like and that is the tip of the glow plug you can see at the bottom

They can smoke that bad that some people think the car is on fire and have been known to phone the fire brigade , check this one out !

If you have pulled the under bonnet fuse 8 then there is no way that the FBH should come on and will give you time to get it sorted, but they can get spurious signals from the K Bus from time to time so cut the red and white wire that goes into pin 2 on the 6 pin plug to make sure ( the red and white wire is not needed for operation of the FBH it is used purely for diagnostics so ok to cut it )

Many thanks everyone for the advice, I have not been using the car since before Christmas when I sent my short term licence to DVLA. I had no choice but to use it when I needed to take Margaret to the Walk in Centre. The car has not smoked since, I will take advice the from Trebor and cut the red and white wire. Thanks again, John.

The cause was the sponge in the intake silencer had become dislodged & blocked the intake, I just popped it out & ran the heater until it burned clean again

Just one thing to remember, the ‘smoke’ coming out of the webasto is fumes of diesel............ very combustible. Don’t let it happen by a bonfire or open flame, or you will be kissing your car goodbye in a flash and a bang. Don’t try and prove me wrong.
