If it's only really doing 14 mpg then there will be black smoke coming out of the exhaust even on tick-over.

If you intend to use the car the easy way to check the fuel consumption is to fill the tank right up. Drive the car for a day or two then refill the tank. The amount used to fill it and the mileage readout will give you a reasonably accurate check on fuel consumption.---:}

You won't even get your hands dirty.---;)

The mpg readout is, if I remember correctly, is a rolling average over the last 100 miles. If its been stored with the battery out the previous figure will have been cleared and its starting from scratch again.

Reset the mileage reading to zero and then drive it for a day or two.

If you're lucky it might show 50 mpg.----:D

You give me hope for when I un-SORN my 1.8T - avoiding the salty roads so off since last month. How were your brakes and handbrake?

Hi, i left the handbrake off and manually pushed car back and forward a few times a year. Removed battery and the fuel level was left very low.When after a few years i decided to get it back on the road i put 1 gallon of fresh fuel conected the battery and it started first time. It also passed its MOT same day with no advice. I think if it was left outside it would have been a different story.

Not necessarily. I had a 1.8 that sat in a parking space for about 18 months, I had access to other vehicles and didn't need to use it. Went to put it back on the road, new battery, started first time.
