What car did you pass your test in ? and how much?
Took lessons from August 1977... failed 2 tests... passed my test on Tuesday 21st February 1978 in a Fiat 124 four door saloon... Driving instructor was an ex-police chief from Barbados..... even showed me photographs (as i didn't believe it either) Even had a 1 hour lesson on the M4 to London and back to Reading.
Oh! i paid £3.50 a lesson, and did I moan when it went up to £4 |
Passed my test Nov 1st 1990 in a red Nissan Micra owned by my instructor. ☺Boy did it vibrate over 50mph! Was driving my own Vauxhall Cavalier GLS before the Micra though with dad teaching me. Still have the Cavalier in the garage but cant afford to get it out...yet. Hoping to long term tho!
|
I passed my test in 1964 in a Bedford CA van amazingly at the first go because when I drove off I had left the sliding door open, in those days you could drive around with the door open. Perhaps it was my emergency stop that impressed, I nearly put the little lady examiner through the windscreen. No seat belts in those days!!
|
only had 2 lessions me dad told me how to drive as he did with my brother i past 1st time in a vauxhall viva 1978.. my brother failed on the 1st attempt not using his rear view mirror enough but past the second time
|
A wonderful little Wolsely Hornet.

My friend's father had a 124 Special T which went like stink. Combination of a smashing engine and tinfoil bodywork which weighed nothing. Passed me test first go in a dark green Viva HC, despite mounting the kerb with the rear o/s wheel in the reversing-round-a-corner test. In my defence, Your Honour, the streets were a couple of inches deep in snow at the time - maybe he realised I couldn't actually see the kerb :getmecoat: |

|
I ran motorbikes for about 20 years before ever getting round to cars. My job duties changed to include driving so the company put me through the test, in a BSM Corsa in the mid '90s.
|
Wolseley 1500 in 1968, three weeks after my 17th birthday. No lessons. Dad gave up after telling me to slow down all the time. He just sat next to me with his eyes shut! When I got back and told him that I had passed, he said that now, I would learn how to drive. The following day I was out in the O series Bedford 4 tonner. :duh:
|
My father was a class 1 Police traffic car driver but he refused to give friends or family lessons as he'd just end up falling out with them :D
|
In a 1986 escort 1.4 lean burn ;)
|
My Dad learnt me to drive in my first car, a mk3 cortina then I had 6 lessons in a Datsun sunny and passed in that car in 1985.
|
Passed (2nd attempt) in my dad's car, a new Austin 1300 in Teal Blue 1972
|
First Learned to drive in my dads zephyr 6, column gear change, handbrake under the dash! then used my mums mini clubman estate, then went with professional driving school driving a Datsun 120Y.
Finally took my test in 1978 driving a MK2 Escort 1600 sport. (cool as you like back in the day). My dad bought my very first car off of a mate of his ... MK2 Cortina 1300 deluxe 2 door. |
Passed my Driving Test, for a car, in September 1960 driving a 100E side valve, three speed Ford Prefect. At the time I thought that car was pretty nifty after some lessons in my own 1932 Morris Ten.
|
Passed first time in 1978 in a Austin Maxi , harvest gold IIRC

I got my driving licence on 6th Nov. 1967 and passed my test first time on 8th Dec 1967 during which time I had been involved in two accidents.
Stationary on both occasions, struck by a bus passing on the nearside then two weeks later by a van sitting in a car park. Oh! My test was in my mother’s Morris Minor HCS 574E I had three lessons in a Vauxhall Viva GSD 7E |
My pass was in 1974 in the "company's" Hillman Hunter.
|
My Dad gave me lessons passed in 1969 in a Wolsley 16/60 at my second attempt in Trowbridge. I was given the car when my Dad got his Wolsley six.:}
|
slight disadvantage....
On my second test I had an examiner sat in the back, examining the examiner in the front, needless to say I failed just on being in the wrong lane at a roundabout......
|
Tought myself in three wheeler Reliant, Had three lessons with driving instructor so that I would have a car to take the test in. First lesson in a Datsun went great
second lesson the instructor came in a Fiat I think it was, I could not find the gears in that thing, I demanded the Datsun for my test. Passed first time.1978. Kev |
1968 - in an 850cc Austin Mini - the gear lever was so sloppy that 2nd meant pushing it halfway across the passenger's seat, whereas third and top necessitated pulling it back to nigh on the middle of the driver's seat.
I took my test in Redcar, which at that time had only one set of treffic lights to negotiate :} Did my learning in Dad's A55 Cambridge - radial tyres and no power steering - took muscles like a weightlifter to get it round corners. |
Passed first time in a Mk 1 Ford Escort in 1975 at Wanstead,East London
|
learned to drive in my uncles pb 5 at the age of 12, passed my test first time in 86 in a toyoto starlet, day after i bought a 2ltr capri

Passed my test in the summer of 1973, a few months before my 18th birthday. I took it in a 1962, two door Ford Cortina 1200 deluxe - the first car my parents ever owned - and I can stiil remember its registration number which was 389 FCG.

Driving test car
July 1979 first time Chrysler Sunbeam

Ford 100e van. Reg no:- XOM 611.Passed in 1964. Thought I had failed on the reversing round a corner. Also thought I had failed on the three point turn. Kept putting it in second I think instead of reverse, but examiner said I did not get flustered so he would forget about it.Told me not to put the learner plates down the drain as they had got complaints from the water authorities about the amount of L plates down it.
|
Dad's 1965 MK1 two door Cortina.February 1974.Then shared the driving to visit relatives in Poland a few months later.
|
1975 at 16 years old in Dad's 1975 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale 2 door hardtop. Passed the first time. That was like parallel parking an oil tanker. It felt 20' long, but was really only 19' long and 6'8" wide!
My bike test was in 1979 on my first big boy bike - a 1975 Honda 400/4 Supersport. It was raining so the tester stayed under cover at the mall entrance and watched me do a figure 8 in the parking lot and demonstrate my hand signals. Cheers, Glenn |

I think I used a VW Jetta.
Both my children and I passed first time, alas my wife did not get the benefit of my instruction and passed 2nd time. We both have grand farther rights, something good for being "old" :) At least a year before my children started to drive I would have them read out what the signposts meant and what the speed limits were as well as telling me about hazards. My daughter went on to pass a course for driving ambulances on blues and twos. I wonder if she will progress to driving a fire engine on blues and twos. macafee2 |
December 9th 1986, Mk 3 Escort, even remember the reg number, FNW409Y.
Steve. |
For me it was a 10 day driving course in the Army in 1955 driving an old Bedford truck and then given my pink slip, which is a pass and then obtained licence. Drove HGV's from the age of 21 which required no extra licence at the time. When the licence was eventually introduced I had automatic grandfather rights so no test required.
|
In 1970 in a 105E Ford Anglia which was my own car. My brother taught me to drive after I had had 10 lessons and the instructor seemed more interested in me signing up for another 10 lessons than me taking my test.
Passed first time. |
1968 in a bedford rl in the army end of 69 when the hgv came in i was in germany driving tank transporters got my hgv 1 under grandfather rights because i was under 21 my first hgv licence had stampted on it in red for military use only
|
In 1980 failed my first test due to the driving instructor going on holiday he had a Triumph Dolomite 1500 and his mate turned up with an old Triumph 1300, all the controls were different.
Changed instructors and passed my test in 1981 in a 3 door Vauxhall Chevette. |
1974 - Vauxhall Viva HC (my Dad's car at the time). I had some lessons beforehand in an Austin Allegro Mk 1 (complete with quartic steering wheel).
Pete |
1978 Lada 1500 estate. WOL 794T. Yellow with a brown vinyl roof. An absolute pig to drive with no power steering and an ancient gearbox.
Must have passed due to sympathy from the examiner. |
1975, first time in a Morris Marina............Brian probably still owns it lol :getmecoat:
|
1972 in a 1967 Wolseley 6/110, which my father owned and taught me in, at Santa Pod just before it became a raceway! Passed first time.
|
Mark one Escort estate with a hole in the drivers door and when you stood on the brakes it pulled sharply to the left but still passed back in '82.
|
First had lessons in an Austin A60 Cambridge during 1966, didn't really get on with my instructor so I changed schools and passed my test at the second attempt in 1967 driving their Austin Mini 850.
Jim |
Started to have lessons with BSM in a Metro in 1984......hit a dog on my second lesson with them because instructor wasn’t watching the road :duh:
Changed to a local instructor who had just got a mark 1 Suzuki Swift with a digital dash  8 lessons later, I passed first time. Seem to remember it was £10 per hour. |
Around 1984 in a Datsun Sunny, Edgeware Road, London. Instructor who was very good was an independent but had the habit of eating a lot of food in the car, so the steering wheel was always greasy!
|
Learned to drive at age 11 on a private lane in my Mum's Mk2 1300 Escort.
Passed through 3 Mini's an Avenger and a Chevette, which were all driving MOT failures that I used to tear about the lane and fields by our home. Passed test in 1991 5 weeks after 17th Birthday, Dad being a police advanced driver helped a lot with my ability. Also passed my motorcycle test in 1991. I am currently back to school - just completed week 1 of 3 of the standard police driving test. Skid pan yesterday! Theory exam next Thursday, plenty of "progressive driving" to come in the next 2 weeks. Currently studying Roadcraft and Highway Code, wish me luck!!! |
You don't see so many these days with L-plates stuck on and a family member in the passenger seat, finger nails deep into the dash top.
I passed first time in Nov 77 in a Mini. Did a 1-point turn :D Next day out in my Austin 1100 i went through a large puddle and it cut out. Luckily for me a passing van driver realised that the front facing distributor had got soaked, a few squirts of WD40 and I was sorted. Went on to teach my younger brother, girlfriend and a few mates well enough for them to pass, all before the age of 20. Perish the thought now but I did teach my daughter to drive 12 years ago in our Ford Probe. Local industrial estate on a Sunday morning using discarded pallets, buckets and bobbins to create a course for parking practice and more. |
Passed my test on Nov 5th 1965, so there is no chance i can remember what car.:D Remember date as it's Lester Piggots' birthday.:}

My Dad's old Mini, back in 1975. Spent all morning trying to get the bluddy thing running on all four cylinders.
With a bit of time to spare got it sorted, down to the test centre, opened the passenger door for the examiner and gave him the seatbelt, went round to my side and the door handle came off in my hand. :getmecoat: Gingerly put it back in and off we went. By the time I got down to the bottom of the road I thought I'd failed, and you could have knocked me down with a feather at the end when he said I had passed. :D |
Self taught!
Took my car test in 78 in a borrowed Triumph Toledo. |
First car I ever drove unofficially at around 15 was my big sisters Marina Coupe. Was an early car in a rather horrid mushroom beige colour. Officially passed the test in July 87 in my instructors red Renault 11 GTL. He was a rather large gent so the car always felt like it had a lean on, especially as the suspension was like blancmange!

I knew I had it nailed when the examiner walked out to it and said "I used to have one of these" :¬) |
I failed two tests in a car, then passed first time in double decker British Leyland Bus. It was middle of winter with 6 inches of snow on the road.
|
I drove round the farm, in a Marina Coupe and passed in. Vauxhall Nova!
|
Passed in a metro with bsm. 1st car was a Talbot samba. Bought it with a knackered engine and rebuilt it.

I passed my test in a Cortina 2000 GXL in 1979. I kept that car for 2 years and racked up over 30k miles in it.
|
All these great old cars and vans used to pass tests in.
I passed on my 17th birthday in Nov 1973 driving a Datsun Sunny. I wasn't asked to do a 3 point turn or a hill start, I did an emergency stop and reversed around a corner. We went about half a mile from the test centre and just drove around for ten minutes and then back to the test centre, he said congratulations and that was it, maybe 20 minutes including asking me some questions, it was snowing too and I still had to do hand signals :D |
Taught in my dads Ford Corsair V4, then he told to get some lessons before I took the test from the local instructor to make sure I knew what was needed.
Passed first time in 1968 in a mk1 Escort 1100. It was such an easy car to drive |
I took my first "instructional" trips with the old man in a 1968 Mini fitted with a 1300 twin carb MG lump. That was fun. Official lessons were in standard Mini 1000s. Took and passed the test in the 1300. It was in Hemel Hempstead as I remember.

Hillman Avenger, in 1973, in North Shields

I actually passed my test on Saint George's day last year, in a Diesel toyota yaris MK3, which I really rated, thought it was ace. Nothing on the Rover of course, but a very nice and forgiving car to learn in. Only criticisms are the oddly long throw gearstick and light steering. Still took me 3 tries to pass, I put it down to nerves.
|
Passed in a Renault Clio in 2007, my daily driver was a 1968 Triumph Herald at the time.

Passed in 1989 in a Ford Fiesta 1.1 Popular plus in navy blue.:}

Passed car test first time January 1965 in an Austin A40 farina, taught by my Father . Passed Bike test at same centre in Birmingham 2 weeks later , but was the second time around . Waiting period for a test was 3 or 4 months , peak of the post 2nd WW baby boom! One bike test I had to cancel due to snow, so heavy I couldn't see where I was going, but they did allow a rebook at no cost.

Long before I had my license if it was wet I used to drive around at work in one of the many Sherpa minibuses BR owned! Used to have to go down to the diesel shed several times a shift to check what locos were there and that were parked in the correct order for departure, not much fun in the peeing rain!
|
If I get a bit of luck my way this year, a 2017 Kia Cee'd.

I passed in a 2016 Vauxhall Corsa (my instructors car) on the 4th of April 2018 car wasn't so bad to drive, seats were a tad uncomfortable though :}

I passed in 2000 driving my instructors brand new ford focus millennium edition (yes the one that makes flying banana look subdued!) I didn't feel at all self conscious learning in that nooooo:duh:

From John New Member
I passed my test in my father's 1950's Morris Cowley in 1966 reg no GSD 119. Our next car was a Vauxhall Victor with a dashboard that jutted out. When you exited the car you cracked your knee bone on the dash. Reg No 424 BGD
John |
Passed test in March 1974 in a Fiat 850. A 1966 reg - D plate. Can vaguely remember reg number but not 100% certain!
|
Toyota Corolla in 1980's. Instructor had the clutch changed the day before my test. Stalled it 4 times but still passed. Clutch had done 80,000 miles, not bad for a first clutch in a learner vehicle!
|
Car test 6/3/85 in my Morris Minor pick up, bike test 10/98 on Honda VFR400, bus test 6/6/03 in Volvo B10M Plaxton Paramount HGV test, not taken yet, but still have provisional and intend to take it sometime.
|
Passed my test in a Sierra Cosworth. And that wasn't my fastest or most powerful either that was my Rover 800 abet modified by the Embassy I got it from pushing 365bhp and armoured still had the lights in . Only done 7-8 miles to the gallon if I was good.
|
I passed my driving test in a Triumph Herald in 1964.:}
|
In 1972, with my Innocenti Mini Cooper with wide wheels and a very noisy
exhaust. |
Austin 1100 in 1965 at the second attempt. Had all my lessons in that car too. A green shield stamp (remember them?) was strategically stuck on the rear window by the instructor so that when reversing if the stamp was lined up with the kerb then the car was the correct distance from it; made reversing round the corner that you had to do then a doddle.
|
Practised for my test in my 1937 Standard flying nine.
Borrowed my father-in -laws Ford consul Cortina 1954 and passed my test first time in 1958. Passed my motorbike test in 1954 on a 1937 BSA 250 ohv. Three speed gear lever on the side of the petrol tank. ( Hand change. ) Girder forks and no rear suspension. Colvert.---:D |
After reading about all the interesting cars people passed in I feel mine may be a little underwhelming.
I passed my test in april 2000 in a red 1998 poverty spec Ford Fiesta 1.3. Pretty boring. :getmecoat: |

Ford Escort Mk1
Seems a long time ago now, but I really loved driving the car. It felt so smooth and fast, as any car would have done first time behind the wheel, although my first car was a Vauxhall Viva which also felt very smooth and fast! Passed first time when I was 17. I always put it down to being very courteous and stopping at a zebra crossing on my test:}!

|
I had three of them. ;)
The last was a panel van, converted to a 1.8 using parts from the sedan. Rebuilt/designed the front suspension, fitted a ford 105e diff and ford Granada seats. It had a form of electronic ignition and a well used roof rack-it saw many miles of both work and pleasure trips. |
