Manifold Flaps
 

2002 Rover 75 2.5V6 SE Club Auto - 92K miles.
New Member looking for technical help and second opinion.
On acceleration car jerking, hesitant then sudden surge with loss of power. Took into my local service station who have done service, repairs and MOTs over the last few years - always seem honest and trustworthy. After free inspection and diagnosis, said it is to do with "manifold flaps" which are disintegrating and would not be financially viable to repair and while the car could be safe to drive for up to another year, it should ultimately be consigned to the knackers yard!
I have had car for nearly 15 years and would be grateful for any advice before I bid farewell.

Called VIS motors/flaps can be repaired or replaced, don't let your garage tell you otherwise;):D

Secondhand KV6 manifolds are out there if you shop around £100 upwards. Plus approx 1 hour labour to fit. You may also have to replace the VIS motors on the manifold so allow approx £100 for a pair of VIS motors too (actually they can normally be repaired as per suzublu post for much less, but it depends on your technical abilities).

Same manifold is also fitted to the Freelander V6, so search breakers for these too.

Some folks have opened up the KV6 manifold and removed the noisy internals, however this is not for the faint hearted, and there is a question on the power and efficiency once removed.

What an utter load of tosh. Vis motors either work or they don't, they will not make the car stutter or jerk. If the flaps connected to the Power Vis in the manifold had failed you would know by the noise they make, believe me.

If the flap that is connected to the Balance Vis has failed you would notice a sustained slight drop in economy or performance depending on the position it has failed in.

Get the car on a purpose made T4 diagnostics machine and see what other codes come up besides the Vis motors (Which by the way are almost certainly not working, if you have had the car so long, I can help with that ;) )

Michael; despite your faith in your local service station, I'm afraid that they're wrong on this occasion. It's not that they're being dishonest, they're trying to be helpful and guessing what is wrong because they haven't been able to find it. The VIS system will be a mystery to most garages.

I have an idea of what the cause might be. It's very common and easily and cheaply rectified. After the first few years of production, the type of fuel filter was changed. Unfortunately the new type is within a two part canister with a screw lid. The lid loosens over time and fuel pressure to the injectors drops. Eventually the car doesn't start at all.

The solution is to tighten the two halves again by hand and fit a special plastic clip which was produced by MG Rover to cure this problem. Do not under any circumstances open the canister. I'm told that it's very difficult to reassemble without snagging the 'O' ring seal within and if that happens, the fuel pressure problem will persist or worsen. It just requires tightening and the clip fitting.

Of course the fuel filter might not be the culprit but one thing is definite. It's not the VIS actuators.

Thank you for your advice. Unfortunately my mechanical skills are limited to say the least so I am somewhat at the mercy of the "professionals". I will try and get a second opinion from a Rover specialist if they are still out there!

Thanks for your reply and advice. Prior to this latest episode there has been a "knocking" or "rattling" sound. If this is the noise you are referring to this could well be the Manifold Flaps. My mechanical skills are limited, so if you have any suggestions or know of any Rover specialists in the London/South East area to get a second opinion and see if it is financially viable to repair.

Thank you for your reply and advice. My mechanical skills are limited. My first thought was that it felt like a fuel blockage, so I might get a second opinion with regard to checking the fuel filter. As you can see from other replies, it may well be viz valves/manifold flaps.
