Largest battery which will fit - definative

I asked earlier which was the highest capacity battery which would fit and fit properly into my CDTi. The discussion has rattled around for years as to which is the largest, but there have been no definitive replies and lots of warnings that the lid will not fit/ possibly be damaged in forcing it on with a 190mm high battery.

The battery I had was a 175mm high Bosch. The battery I was wondering if it would fit, was 190mm high. So I tested the available height with a 10.5mm thick lathe cutting tool and it cleared easily. I now know my maths was wrong :duh: 175 + 10.5 is 185.5 = NOT 190mm. I had a silly moment, but too late - I had already ordered a 190mm high battery yesterday afternoon.

It seems unlikely, but just in case there are variations amongst the 75 range, in battery boxes...
The internal height of my battery box, with lid removed and measured to the high point of the internal base close to the 'wall', was 187mm. My Varta battery fits around 2mm below the top of this - which suggests the Varta's 190height is probably nearer 185mm.

Panic not, it arrived this morning and fitted absolutely fine and I do mean fine.

This is the battery I ordered...

It is Varta's top model, with a 5 year guarantee. I paid £65.26, with standard delivery and a £1.77 discount from a promo code I found on line. It was delivered next day, this morning. Promo discount code is - FACEBOOK45

It fits fine, with the lid and the metal bracket and the retaining strap in place. There was no bulging of the lid at all, it fits absolutely perfectly. It was no more of a struggle to get the lid on, than it had been with my earlier 175mm high battery.

My old much abused Bosch was 7 years old, I have been looking to replace it for the past couple of years due to its failing capacity, but I have nursed it carefully and it has never let me down. The only thing holding me back, was confusion over the the which was the biggest capacity I could fit, the continual inconclusive discussion on here.

I tow and I didn't much fancy risking towing and breaking down with no spare power for lights on a dark back country road.

Glad you got that sorted Harry and that's useful information to note for future, I too have had great prices and service from Tayna.
I got the slightly smaller Varta one last year, for much the same reason - I wasn't sure the bigger one would comfortably fit. Varta make the batteries for Bosch and this is otherwise identical to the Bosch S5 range, same warranty etc, you just pay the extra for the Bosch 'name'.

Thanks for the definitive answer

I'm sure mine's getting ready for a new one, so that's very useful info. Good price too for a top quality battery.

I'm confused :getmecoat: so how did you get the 190mm battery to fit?

Because it turned out not to be 190 mm

''which suggests the Varta's 190height is probably nearer 185mm. '' :}

I have a Yuasa 190mm battery taken from a 52 plate ZT, it fitted perfectly including the lid.

I have just gone to fit the Yuasa 190mm battery to a 2001 ZT, and the battery is too tall, battery lid does not fit. The battery I had taken out of the 2001 ZT is a BOSH 180mm...

What am I doing wrong, is there a change in battery boxes?
