Headlight height
I can not find out what is the highest a headlight can be fitted to a car/ Range Rover. I was sitting in my 75, when a Range Rover pulled up beside me, and the headlights were just about level with my eyes. No wonder you get blinded by these higher than normal headlights, never mind those with the terrible LED lights. Surely there is a legal height that headlights can be fitted. Does anyone know please?

Cheers Andy. Will take a while to read through that lot by the looks of it.

If I've scanned it right the figure you're looking for is 1200mm - or 4 feet in old money.
Since a 75 is a little over 1400mm high it's no wonder that they blind us  :duh:. |
just a quick read through
SCHEDULE 2 PART I Requirements relating to obligatory front position lamps and to optional front position lamps to the extent specified in part ii Vertical– (i)Maximum height above the ground– (A)Any vehicle not covered by sub-paragraph (B), (C) or (D): 1500 mm or, if the structure of the vehicle makes this impracticable, 2100 mm (B)A motor vehicle first used before 1st April 1986 and a trailer manufactured before 1st October 1985: 2300 mm (C)A motor vehicle, first used on or after 1st April 1986, having a maximum speed not exceeding 25 mph: 2100 mm (D)A large passenger-carrying vehicle and a road clearance vehicle: No requirement (ii)Minimum height above the ground No requirement Not sure if front position lamps mean headlights? |
I was looking at the bit about dipped beam headlights:
SCHEDULE 4 PART I Requirements relating to obligatory dipped-beam headlamps and to optional dipped-beam headlamps to the extent specified in part II...... 2. Position...... (c) Vertical– (i)Maximum height above the ground– (A)Any vehicle not covered by sub-paragraph (B): 1200 mm (B)A vehicle first used before 1st January 1952, an agricultural vehicle, a road clearance vehicle, an aerodrome fire tender, an aerodrome runway sweeper, an industrial tractor, engineering plant and a home forces' vehicle....... Whatever it is, it's at roughly head height when driving a normal car :duh: |
Thats exactly how I read it.It is about those cars with the led lights went through a test to see if the lights are focused to high. I wonder how many people have had accidents because they have been blinded by incorrectly focused headlights.

I thought I'd been flashed by a speed camera a while ago.
It was actually the battle tank behind with it's ludicrously bright LED's that was flashing a driver pulling out of a side road  :duh:. And when they come towards you with full beam on...... Maybe 6V standard bulbs should make a come back? At least when you can't see when you're going it slows you down. And we all know that speed kills..... |

The more the engine revved, and the faster you went, the more the lights became brighter. ;) It also had an extra built in safety feature, as the same was true with the horn volume. :getmecoat: |
Wasn't a 125cc D1 Bantam was it?
Passed my bike test on one of those and have a vague memory that that's how the headlight was (wasn't :D:D). |
