Union Flag
 

Seeing all the photos and films about VE Day, it’s amazing how many Union Flags (Jacks) are fastened to the pole/stick/post (and therefore being ‘flown’) upside down.

Anyone else noticed?

Yes. Very often. Lots of folk don't know what their own flag looks like.

The flag on this forum at the top of the page is WRONG.

The spacing of the colours but, typically British, nobody seems to care.---:shrug::shrug::shrug:

The flag flown upside down is a distress signal.:bowdown::bowdown:

I suspect most people do not know if the flag is upside down or not and that upside down it is a sign of distress.

I know there is a right way up, I know upside down is a sign of distress but I am not confident I know which is the correct way up.

Broad white band at top next to flag pole is how I remember it. I have had to point it out at a number of overseas British car club meets I have attended. It of course has never been intentionally flown been inverted, just not realized it asymmetric.

AFAIK the uk is the only country to have a flag that's so difficult to determine which way up it is! Many representations don't offset the the white and red X's at all - I've just stared at the forum banner and can't see that it would be any different rotated 180 degrees. Another point is that when printed which side is the flagpole? I've far more issue with these blacked out Union jack patches on uniforms than which way up it should be.

Hopefully not going off topic.

Has any one else noticed the two flags partially furled (I think that's the term) behind the podiums at the Downing street press conferences.

The blue portions appear to be a black colour.

Not sure if it might be our television, but also wondered if it might be the background lighting set up behind the podiums.

Any other thoughts?

The image in the club shield is a stylised interpretation of the Union Flag, not a faithful recreation. You’ll notice that all the red & white diagonal stripes are of equal width throughout. So in fact ours is not actually hung upside down ;)
