Was there a change to licences in January 2013?

I think it's probably a good change. I got my licence in 1994 so I can tow a trailer but I'm not sure what the big deal is and don't think it needs a separate test really.

I always had a concern about the extra test for towing and wondered if the accident statistics supported the introduction of the change in the first place.

Reversing a trailer is an art, watching someone do it well is a pleasure.
Perhaps some training should be mandatory, as while a 6x4 trailer for going to the local tip wont cause a problem, a caravan can.

Morning,
I would much rather reverse a caravan than a 6x4 or in my case a 5x3 trailer. The trailer is far more difficult to reverse in a straight line!

Makes a mockery of why the rule was introduced in the 1st place. Changed on a whim just like that.

Eldest Son now eyeing up that lovely new Bailey in the drive that I treated myself to :D

I think that is because the trailer wheels are so close to the back of the car, any "misalignment" when reversing seems amplified

I’m rather pleased-I was eyeing up doing my trailer licence so I’m able to buy a car trailer to move vehicles about. Beforehand I’d have to be very careful of calculating the gross train weight so I didn’t exceed the limit of my licence, now I can tow up to 3,500kgs, which exceeds the capacity of most cars. Result!

My small trailer is a wotsit to reverse as i cant see the wheels (or any bit of it unless loaded high) until its at an angle to the car that cant be corrected. On the bigger one the mud guards are the same width as the car so any deviation is visible in the wing mirrors. BUT! I can still make a mess of it!

what size is the trailer, I can correct my 6x4 easy enough, sometimes, but i reverse slowly

Agreed, my 3.5t tipping trailer is far easier to reverse then my little 750kg tip run trailer however it does need a lot more space to manoeuvre!
