Another fan headache

Fitted a Revotec fan supplied by Jules about 3 years ago, no problems till earlier this year. Noticed air con not blowing cold air, did all the tests, demist etc. and noticed fan not working. Stripped front down, was just about to start removing fan, after putting a meter on all the connections to see if we had any life (all ok), tapped the fan and it sprang into life. Ok so far so good, reassembled front, checked again, fan still working (you can hear it before seeing it!!). Checked on and off over few weeks, all seems ok. Still no air con though, it had been thoroughly serviced last autumn with full leak test, surprisingly came back 100% fine, but no cold air. Put that on the ‘to do’ list as MOT on horizon and car in need of exhaust and full rear suspension replacement. Fan not working again, checked this morning as first frost of autumn shows the FBH not starting up, but fan silent and still. I’ve checked the wiring, fuses, relay, PCB fixed by French Mike at time fan replacement, all seems as it should be, but no spinning fan. I bet if I strip the front end off and ‘tap’ it gently it will restart, but I can exactly do that on a regular basis!! Any more ideas/suggestions?

In the first instance Scott I would contact Jules to see if he has any suggestions.

Regarding your air conditioning, is the compressor engaging when you press the windscreen demist button?

Thanks for that Simon, I’ll message Jules see if he has any ideas. I don’t think it is engaging when I do the demist test, the car’s revs would normally drop for a second or two before picking back up and haven’t noticed that. The car’s away getting under sealed at the moment so can’t check today. But I am pretty certain.

Hi Scott,

It's best to be sure about this so ask an assistant to press the windscreen demist button on and off whilst you listen at the open bonnet for a thud. Slightly more involved but 100% reliable is to remove the OSF wheel arch liner so that you can see the compressor clutch clearly. :}

If the compressor isn't engaging then you've most likely lost your refrigerant. Remember that when the fan doesn't run you won't get terribly cold air unless the car is moving at speed.
