Yet another problem...Battery light
If anyone's seen my previous posts, you will know we've had a few issues with our new 75 (diesel).
Today we've had yet another issue that's come up. Parked up in morrisons and once we got back into the car, the battery warning light started flashing along with intermittent flashes of a "battery charge fault". this went on for a few miles, went totally off and then the battery warning light stayed on (no fault message). we're now parked up at home and can only wait and see if it starts tomorrow. we've had the car for about 3 weeks and use it for the work run which is about 5 miles each way. Never seen those lights on till now. I've got no choice but to take it to a garage tomorrow as I just wouldn't know where to start. Bit worried at some of the prices I've seen if the issue is with the alternator. I don't know if this is purely a coincidence but I started using the econ function today as I found it warmed the car up quicker. fingers crossed this doesn't turn out to be an expensive repair. thoughts appreciated |
Sounds like the alternator to me, you might get away with fitting a brush pack as long as the stator isn't too worn. Otherwise it will be a

If it's just the brushes get them done ASAP or you will ruin the armature and you will need to buy a complete alternator.-

Went to the garage this morning. Mechanic popped the bonnet and took a look and said it was the alternator. I'm a bit surprised he's so sure as from what I read so far, you have to test voltages to be sure you've ruled other things out?

the mileage is around 70,000. is there a part number for me to look into? cheers |
Exactly that happened to me. Contrary to the advice given above, I carried on drving, as it seemed intermittent, and I was a bit preoccupied at the time... so I needed a replacement alternator.
So whatever you do, I wouldn't carry on driving it. I'm no expert, and no doubt somebody with encyclopaedic knowledge like Arctic will be along to advise. Access is pretty awkward down that side of the engine, but I know it can be done (by people more skilled than I). |

guess we will see what garage says... |

Yep - you've been running on battery, which is now dead :( I managed to get home too, then charged the battery with a charger, to get it to the mechanic. New alternators can be expensive - I got a used one. |
