Avoid Mintex

If you'd asked me a month ago "name a brand of brake pads", I would only be able to say Mintex. Well I fitted new Mintex front discs and pads in an altogether neat box last month, BUT every week I'm washing off the crud that's appeared. Never known such sooty pads. Not a happy bunny.

So that's sooty as well as squealy.
Don't know who made the original OEM pads, but they were always free from both and very good at it.

The pads in the blue SLP boxes were TRW and very good. They are all I use these days.

My experience of Mintex was the same - they squeal and create too much dust. I went back to Vauxhall OEM on my Omega, after trying Mintex, for this reason.

I had a heap of trouble with mintex pads fitted to our VW UP a couple of years ago. Never ever again.

Strange world isn’t it? I’ve always used Mintex pads, front and back, on my ZTT ever since I bought it, and never had any excessive dust or squealing issues

Always used their disc too but, this time I fitted some MTec drilled and grooved to the front along with Mintex pads. Again, no issues whatsoever

I'll explain what happened to my VW UP

bought a pair of new discs on eBay, but thought I want so decent pads. Bought mintex, within 50 miles I had a serious brake judder. I couldn't be bothered with it so took it to my local garage and told him the discs must be rubbish and could he fit me some more.

Picked it up, again within 50 miles a serious judder. I took it back, he swapped the discs again under warranty. Again within 50 miles the judder was back. I thought what can it be, can't be the pads they are mintex, but this was the 3rd pair of discs. Bought some EBC green stuff pads and they were fantastic, the judder never returned. I told Bob at the garage of my findings, he was amazed just as I was.

Well there is Mintex, and there is or should I say, was Mintex Don ;)

The latter made quality friction material down the road from you in Cleckheaton, until they were swallowed up by TMD friction, and subsequently resold to Japanese NISH.

So the question is, were these real Mintex, or one of the plethora of fakes?

This is what happens when manufacturing is outsourced to the far east, NISH manufactures in Japan, Korea, India and China, suddenly a well known and respected brand becomes just a logo on a cardboard box containing something of indeterminate quality.

An all too familiar story sadly :(

too true, it's a sad state of affairs

I bought a pair of Mintex front discs 4 months ago and they are rubbish, after a few heavy applications of the brakes they are vibrating.

It will be the last set I buy.

They used to be one of the best discs you could buy but they are worse than some of the cheap ones on the market.

This is in the back of the MK2 Tourer I am looking at. I was told it had new brake pads. Anyone have experience with Meyle for pads? I know they're a desirable brand for suspension/steering parts.

Cheers,
Glenn
