75 1.8T: Blue Smoke - Has my Turbo Gone?
Over the past couple of days the car has started to generate blue smoke particularly upon startup/first 5 mins or so.
Had a bit of read and the seals on the turbo seems to be a common fault. Just wondering whether that's whats up with mine? Took a pic of the turbo and there appears to be slight oil staining on it plus around the pipe which I've tightened just a fraction in the vain hope thats whats causing the problem. Any tests I can do? Only curious thing is that it doesnt seem to do it half as bad afte car is warmed up. It is using oil though. http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i2...ps7d5160dd.jpg http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i2...psb4440e4e.jpg |
take the output air pipe to the inlet manifold off and check for oil in it if there is first sign of turbo failure

OK will have a look and report back :-)
If it has gone how easy are thy to swap - all looks very tight for space :-( |
if its just a small puff on start up could be vavle stem oil seals
|
I'm afraid its got a lot worse now and smokes virtually all the time - got really bad I'm afraid so if anyone knows a good place to get a turbo and knows of a howto that would be great.

http://s68.photobucket.com/user/jeff...a12f2.mp4.html Having difficulty getting the new gaskets - are they reuseable with being metal? (need the car going again today) |
Woah, that has properly gone!
If you have to re-use the gaskets, clean them up with some wet and dry. :) |
I am in the process of changing my turbo, weather permitting, did you remove the alternator to get at it or could you work around it?.
